Cops May Get Assault Weapons in Chicagostan

Cops May Get Assault Weapons in Chicagostan

After a recent outbreak of gun-related violence, Mayor Richard Daley is now pushed into supporting a plan by new Police Superintendent Jody Weis to arm 13,000 Chicago police officers with assault rifles. Depending on how many weapons are eventually deployed, this may develop into the largest militarization of police patrol officers in United States history. If the department arms 10,000 of their officers with M4s, the police will have 9,900 more assault rifles in Chicago than the U.S. Marines presently have in Fallujah, Iraq.

Perhaps instead of up-gunning the police, it is time for Chicago to admit its strict anti-gun laws have failed, and perhaps rescind mandates that only disarm Chicago’s law-abiding citizens in the face of increasing violent criminal activity. Mayor Daley is unlikely to see that logic, however. For him and those like him, guns in the hands of citizens are the problem, not the cure.

Just goes to show that bans on guns don't work...the police should be able to disarm since handguns are not legal in chi-town!

I suggest a large wall surrounding Chicago. Bad guns won't get in, and the virus won't get out.

I'm one of those that "Escaped from Chicago" 21 years ago. Not just because of 2A issues but because of the weather, cost of living, etc.

I had been indoctrinated enough after growing up there that I actually felt like I was doing something wrong by buying a gun in GA after a robbery of my townhouse.

There is a cure. Changing zip codes helps tremendously.

I'm not sure that Atlanta would be my first choice for escape destination.

Ehh, to each his own.

I'm in the extreme suburbs, so that helps a lot.

I was offered a job in either Atlanta or L.A. after school. Given the options I think the right choice was made. My part of town seems like Montana compared to Cook County.

Hey, at least you have the option to protect yourself in Atlanta. If Sonny Perdue would sign HB89, Georgians would be even better able to do so.

I don't live in ATL and actually can't stand getting near the perimeter. I live about 40 miles NE of the city. But there are areas that are even within the perimeter that are quite upscale and nice...if you like the urban living thing.

And then there's the Mayor who believes that we need to rid the streets of guns to prevent vigilantes from taking action...because we have so many cases of vigilantism But she has not been successful so far in implementing any change in that direction...yet. If she does succeed, I would see ATL becoming another Chicago.

Make sure you contact Sonny and tell him to sign HB89.

I've done that with Sonny as well as my Reps. Also signed on to GCO and Georgiapacking. I sent $ to Bearden even though I'm not in his district (ssshhh). He's the best state voice we have, IMO.

I'm about 40 miles NW at the Cobb/Paulding line. I've lived inside 285 and would not do so again, for a variety of reasons. I like the quiet out here too much, primarily.
