Chicago is pretty much a little banana republic anyhow, right here in the middle of the good old USA. Stands to reason that they'd want their own standing army.

Chicago is pretty high on my 'stay the hell outta there' list.

Heyyy now, I'm still a North side fan. That part of being raised there with a Dad that was a rabid fan is hard to assimilate out. But yeah, there's always next year for the Cubbies...

Someone should point out to the Mayor that Guns are Evil. Guns cause Crime! If you give the police assault rifles they will use them can kill people. Most likely innocent people knowing how well Detroit police can shoot.

As for the story, it makes perfect sense. They'll need that kind of firepower when they start the door to door confiscations.
Look at the efforts they have made. It is only a matter of time.

I was born and grew up on Chicago's South Side. I worked in the ghetto. I have seen the problems first hand. Does the CPD need assault weapons? Absolutely. Except for special weapons teams, they are outgunned right now and have been for as long as I can remember.

It isn't ordinary criminals that we are talking about in Chi... it is gangs. They have been there forever and they have a history of extreme violence... whether it is Al Capone's gang or Jeff Fort's Blackstone Rangers or the many other Chicago gangs, they all live by the sword of maximum firepower.

Chicago can't stop the flow of guns into the gangs. That much is clear. They tried to sue the manufacturers to stop production of the gun supply. That failed. They went after outlying dealers to try to dry up supply. That failed. They have tried bans. That failed.

Quite frankly, I doubt that arming the average citizen will solve their problem since the violence is not generally a burglar breaking in with a gun. It is gang warfare and gang related. The gangs are not intimidated by armed citizens.

I think the solution to Chicago's problem lies in counterinsurgency against the gangs. It lies in bringing prosperity to the ghetto neighborhoods. It lies in investment of considerable dollar resources into the police and other agencies to root out and stop gang activity.

That multi-front assault faces many huge hurdles. I don't think an effective war on the gangs will happen... certainly not as long as Daley remains mayor. He has failed to stop it. Something new is needed.

One thing is certain... gun control has failed miserably. And it has stripped ordinary citizens of the right to protect themselves from the ordinary criminals. That is unacceptable to me and I left Chicago and will not return except to visit friends.

Chicago's gangs are a Hydra with many heads. They all have to be cut off at once or they just grow back.
