Well, Hillary and Obama plan on taxing the oil company's profits. So...seeing that most oil companies already pay more in taxes than they do their shareholders in dividends and more than that on maintenance and infrastructure to keep their refineries running...I'd say it will all "pop" when gas runs about 10-12 bucks a gallon, due to their meddling and nobody can afford to get to work.

LOL

- brickboy240

PS: doubt my math on the taxes and profits? Look up Shells profits and taxation for last year...its public record!
It's not Hillary and Obama - it's Hillary and McCain!

I see that plan as a one-hand-to-the-other.

Make the customer pay less tax, and make the oil company pay more tax. Granted, most people won't think far enough ahead, and realize that the oil company isn't going to do anything different - it'll just pass the buck...

3 months later, when the plan "wears off" - prices will be even higher...

Like how the Fed custs interest rates. Inflation takes up the slack, and when the interest rates go back up, so do prices.

We're witnessing the collapse of our economy...

And the "best" part of all this? The Terrorists will think they won, caused it, and it will embolden them even more.

Switching from a full size SUV (14/19 MPG) to a Honda Civic (25/36 MPG) will save you about $1200/yr (12,000mi/yr @ current prices). If you're inverted on your SUV loan, you might never break even on gas alone (although your payments might be cheaper). A motorcycle would probably make that around $1800/yr so the payback is 50% better, and they are easily 33-50% the cost of a car (even less used).
Here's my math:

1990 F-150 (daily driver), 15 mpg pretty much regardless of how I drive it. About $350/month in gas. Paid for.

2000 Camaro SS Convertible, maybe 26 mpg average but doesn't get driven much because of what it is. Probably $100/month in gas. Paid for.

2001 Ford Lightning, lets not discuss mileage. Maybe $10/month in gas. Paid for.

Insurance for the above: $250 (full coverage on all)
Tags/yr for the above: $180

Total cost per month: $725

How am I supposed to save money by getting a more fuel efficient vehicle when I can't make a payment on a nice vehicle for that? Sure, I could get some stripped down POS-mobile, but I've done my time in those. A motorcycle would be nice except that it won't do what I need it to and my daily commute on a bike would be a death sentence.

High gas prices suck, but there's nothing that many of us can do to ease the pain. I've had people jump my case at the gas pump for driving my old truck everyday becuase I am making gas too expensive for THEM since I choose to drive the old truck I love instead of taking on another $1000/month of debt. Parking the SUV's won't do a thing for the "crisis".

We do love our cars...We then should not complain about the cost of enjoying them.

It's quite simple, really...
If you vote for Obama, you are a fu*king idiot.
If you vote for McCain, you are a fu*king idiot.
If your vote is for the lessor of two evils, then you can be comforted knowing that you're less of a fu*king idiot than the other guy!

Does that mean you might start blaming the current idiots ... Or are you sticking with the Let's Blame Bill Clinton party line ??

Gore's nutty idea
Gore proposed last week that the United States "commit to producing 100 percent of our electricity from renewable energy and truly clean carbon-free sources within 10 years."

Not just all new electricity, mind you, which would be challenging enough. But all existing electricity, too.

Exactly ... The best thing I have ever done is outgrow the Hot-Rod phase of my life.
Don't get me wrong ... I have a huge appreciation for the mechanical side of a well engineered piece of machinery ... I just decided I didn't want to own something that is more than descent transportation and fits a need.
It was primarily an economic decision and one day I just decided to spend extra money on something other than a vehicle, if possible.
I still have to afford what I have, but its a whole lot more practical than the 1970/396/SS Camaro that I had in years past. That damn thing was BAD A$$ But it would be on blocks right now!!
It had trouble getting 10mpg on the highway.

I feel for those who travel excessively to work. It's something that really can't be adjusted for without a compromise somewhere else.

Best of luck to any who feel the squeeze.

Sorry, but given the circumstances ... The Lightning, reminds me of this song. Please don't take it the wrong way.
Quote:
My uncle has a country place
That no one knows about
He says it used to be a farm
Before the Motor Law
And on Sundays I elude the eyes
And hop the Turbine Freight
To far outside the Wire
Where my white-haired uncle waits

Jump to the ground
As the Turbo slows to cross the borderline
Run like the wind
As excitement shivers up and down my spine
Down in his barn
My uncle preserved for me an old machine
For fifty odd years
To keep it as new has been his dearest dream

I strip away the old debris
That hides a shining car
A brilliant red Barchetta
From a better vanished time
I fire up the willing engine
Responding with a roar
Tires spitting gravel
I commit my weekly crime

Wind
In my hair
Shifting and drifting
Mechanical music
Adrenaline surge...

Well-weathered leather
Hot metal and oil
The scented country air
Sunlight on chrome
The blur of the landscape
Every nerve aware

Suddenly ahead of me
Across the mountainside
A gleaming alloy air car
Shoots towards me, two lanes wide
I spin around with shrieking tires
To run the deadly race
Go screaming through the valley
As another joins the chase

Drive like the wind
Straining the limits of machine and man
Laughing out loud with fear and hope
I've got a desperate plan
At the one-lane bridge
I leave the giants stranded at the riverside
Race back to the farm
To dream with my uncle at the fireside

"Red Barchetta" RUSH

Well I still haven't....

I'm buying one of the Dodge Challengers - I used to own a 73, which this one is modeled after.. but mine had a 383 - a great engine...

I'll only trade it in when/if they make a convertible version... This will probably be the last muscle car ever made.

Ahh yes...Moving Pictures...the last great Rush album, if you ask me. One of the better songs on that album, too.

What hapened to real rock and roll? It has all but gone away. Nobody puts that kind of creativity into rock and roll anymore.

I know that for some gas prices don't truly mean much, even though they do like to complain about it. I wish I was one of those guys. My budget is tight and continually rising gas prices do effect me. I sold my "dream" truck in December, but I am glad that I got out of it when I did. I went from 17mpg to 33mpg and it has made a big difference since I drive at least 60 miles a day.
