I do believe however that this is not a mainstream Democratic thought process, but supported by a large percentage of those on the Left.

I think Howard Dean tried to dispel this sort of thinking within the Democratic Party by implementing his 50-state strategy and trying to make the Democrats competitive in ALL states, including the red ones. And, it was showing signs that it worked in the 2006 election.

By the way, Jane Smiley is a Pulitzer-prize winning novelist.

Although most states are purple, what do you think the difference is between red states and blue ones, and what causes it?

A political chess game between our elected officials.

I don't think that argues against my point.

Well, then you agree with the author on one thing - that politicians manipulate supposed differences between the states for their own ends.

Sure. I may be conservative but I'm not too dense so as not to agree with some aspects of one whom I dissagree with overall.

Bingo again.

That is why it would be dangerous for the far-left to gain any more control over the democrat party....which is why it would be disastrous for our country to elect Obama.

Think about it...the far left doesn't even like Hillary.

Etta, the similarities between Jane Smiley and Obama is that they both talk down about rural America. They both feel that people cling to things out of frustration and to explain their bitterness. The mentality is the same, but Obama's rhetoric is not as offensive.

I dug this up mostly to draw a parrallel and to show that this mentality and hatred still exists on the far-left and it was used last time as an excuse as to why Kerry lost the election.

My state for example, votes Democrate a lot on the local level, but not so much on the National level. Reason most Democrats in my state do not believe like our National Democrat leaders such as J Murtha, T Kennedy, N Pelosi, B Boxer, and D Finstiend and H Ried and H Dean.

We do not want San Fransico values as in our neck of the woods, SF has no moral or elthical values.

I also do not think Dean has done a good job of dispeling this type thinking in the Democrat party. Just look at Obama and his stereo typing us.....

Pretty easy there. MI for example would be red if Detroit was not in the equasion. CA if you took the Big Cites of SF, LA, and such out would also be red. TN, only the Major citys are Blue.

Come thing I see is areas of a very high Entitlement population, high crime, and high reliance on the govenment for everyting seem to be blue. Also areas near the Elite colleges tend to be blue. Union areas tend to be blue also, this is becuase a union is a form of colectivism, hard to fire those who do not do there fair share of the work.

Most my friends in TN are registered Democrats, but have not voted for a Democrat in a National office (president, senate, house) in more than 20 years. Yet they vote straight Democrat in local and state elections.

Our Democrats in TN for the most part are pro-life, pro gun, against entitlements, fiscal conservatives and so on. They are for prayer in school and Ten commandments on the courts and so on.
