Cheap Tomatoes

Cheap Tomatoes ...

This should make everyone think, be you Democrat, Republican or Independent

From a California school teacher - - -"As you listen to the news about the student protests over illegal immigration, there are some things that you should be aware of:

I am in charge of the English-as-a-second-language department at a large southern California high school which is designated a Title 1 school, meaning that its students average lower socioeconomic and income levels.

Most of the schools you are hearing about, South Gate High, Bell Gardens, Huntington Park, etc., where these students are protesting, are also Title 1 schools.

Title 1 schools are on the free breakfast and free lunch program. When I say free breakfast, I'm not talking a glass of milk and roll -- but a full breakfast and cereal bar with fruits and juices that would make a Marriott proud. The waste of this food is monumental, with trays and trays of it being dumped in the trash uneaten. (OUR TAX DOLLARS AT WORK)

I estimate that well over 50% of these students are obese or at least moderately overweight. About 75% or more DO have cell phones. The school also provides day care centers for the unwed teenage pregnant girls (some as young as 13) so they can attend class without the inconvenience of having to arrange for babysitters or having family watch their kids. (OUR TAX DOLLARS AT WORK)

I was ordered to spend $700,000 on my department or risk losing funding for the upcoming year even though there was little need for anything; my budget was already substantial. I ended up buying new computers for the computer learning center, half of which, one month later, have been carved with graffiti by the appreciative students who obviously feel humbled and grateful to have a free education in America. (OUR TAX DOLLARS AT WORK)

I have had to intervene several times for young and substitute teachers whose classes consist of many illegal immigrant students here in the country less then 3 months who raised so much hell with the female teachers, calling them "Putas" whores and throwing things that the teachers
were in tears.

Free medical, free education, free food, day care etc., etc., etc. Is it any wonder they feel entitled to not only be in this country but to demand rights, privileges and entitlements?

To those who want to point out how much these illegal immigrants contribute to our society because they LIKE their gardener and housekeeper and they like to pay less for tomatoes: spend some time in the real world of illegal immigration and see the TRUE costs.

Higher insurance, medical facilities closing, higher medical costs, more crime, lower standards of education in our schools, overcrowding, new diseases etc., etc, etc. For me, I'll pay more for tomatoes.

We need to wake up. The guest worker program will be a disaster because we won't have the guts to enforce it.
Does anyone in their right mind really think they will voluntarily leave and return?

There are many hardworking Hispanic/American citizens that contribute to our country and many that I consider my true friends. We should encourage and accept those Hispanics who have done it the right and legal way.

It does, however, have everything to do with culture: A third-world culture that does not value education, that accepts children getting pregnant and dropping out of school by 15 and that refuses to assimilate, and an American culture that has become so weak and worried about "politically correct" that we don't have the will to do anything about it.

I think we are going to be as pathetic as France one day soon if we don't grow some balls as a nation and stop destroying it ourselves.

Yes, France is paying a huge price for getting fat and lazy. They also are paying a huge price for unchecked immigration of mid-easterners. Remember the riots in the streets last summer? The unemployed mid-easterner immigrants were destroying and burning everything in Paris suburbs.

There is a huge price to be payed for turning the other cheek, not wanting to offend anyone and being lax on lawbreakers. The bad thing is that most Americans are too damn short-sighted to see this. Couple this with one political party that sees the illegals as their next voting block and the other one hooked in their cheap, unregulated labor and the chances of true reforms are very very slim, indeed.

Ya, I have a real hard time believing this is from a teacher in California. I'm all for immigration reform, but I would rather see facts than some op ed peice plucked from the web. This was probably circulated about welfare moms before and just changed to immigrants. A lot of the same critisizims have been made about our own inner city schools.

I decided to google this article and it's mentioned a lot. The school is supposed to be one in Riverside, Ca. Ironically, that is where I lived for 16yrs. until Sept.

There are 2 high schools in Riverside (2 different school districts) that I believe would be Title I schools. I believe the school they are referring to, if this is a true letter (and I'm not saying it is or isn't-couldn't find it on Snopes), is Norte Vista High.

Again, ironically, my 2 older kids graduated from there. One in '94 and one in '01. We kept our youngest from there because of the problems that had grown since the last one had left. It had become little Latin America, with some South Central L.A. thrown in. The majority of the students I believe are Hispanic and many don't speak English. It is the only school in one district to have the pregnant student program. They have a lot of gang fights. Their test scores are the lowest of any Riverside High school IIRC.

If this letter is authentic, I would surmise it is about the school I mentioned above. Even if the letter isn't authentic, (and I don't know why it wouldn't be) I agree with its comments.

I just thought I'd add my 2 cents.

I also doubt it is authentic, however, I am too lazy to do a search to verify it's veracity. Regardless, abuse of our educational and welfare system by illegal aliens and plenty of our own citizens is not new. Any time you give people all the necessities of life for free, first they appreciate it, then the expect it and eventually they resent it and have nothing but disdain for those who provide it. This nation was built on self-sufficiency. It was that self-sufficient attitude that allowed our forefathers to make the very scary decision to stand up to one of the Super Powers of it's time and carve out a new nation. Pride and self-empowerment come from a job well done and the knowledge through your accomplishments that you are an able, capable and worthy person. Giving people everything takes away this great personal knowledge and the eventual resentment leads to the types of things described in the "letter".

regardless of the specific accuracy... the statements are true for thousands of schools, I have seen it myself. I have only been out of high school for 4 years, when I was in grade school, all of the poor kids got a GREAT meal, I always wondered why I couldnt get a free breakfast...

Your mad because poor kids got a free meal? Without debating about whether these children's parents had any business having kids, do you really think that if a child's parents can't afford to feed them breakfast that they should go hungry? Tell me why.

How did you get out of school without learning empathy?
