Being fanatical does not equate to suicidal whako terrorists, IMO.

Don't they need money to finish their new nuclear reactor?

True, but they could achieve the same goal without taking on these risks. They've now aired more video confessions. They remind me of the Frenchman in the castle in Monty Python's Holy Grail.

Iran may have pulled off this little stunt to see what the position of the UK is and divert attention from other issues. Their neighbors are already screaming that NO military operations will be launched from their soil. I think this has been a great way for Iran to see what position other countries are going to take if someone decides to launch an attack against them for ANY reason. If Iran can provoke an attack from the west, they may be able to rally support from other Arab countries. If the UK would strike them, they may be condemed for not trying enough diplomacy. This would also make it look as though the west was looking for any excuse possible to strike their nuclear efforts. They will be prepared for a covert operation to rescue the soldiers so i dont think thats going to be an option.

My 02

I think that Iran is so close to internal collapse because of pressure from different internal factions that Ahmadinejad sees war as the only way to save his presidency by uniting these factions against a "common" enemy. If we all sit tight and keep up the pressure, Iran will blow its own lid.

I will say this...the tension is also heating up behind the scenes. I cannot elaborate other than to say that I am seeing activities that I haven't seen since invasion of Iraq. And it this is not meant to say...'the sky is falling...' and we're amassing weapons galore, etc. We may be doing the latter; but I'm not aware of it.

The guy is pretty much the french dudes. I think Tony Blair's response ought to be to fart cruise missles in his general direction.

I have read that the Russian intelligence is reporting a buildup of US assets on the Iranian border, we just sent another carrier group and they are conducting the largest naval excersises in the gulf since the ivasion of Iraq.

Muscle flexing or practice?

I must say, one thing that I am happy to see is the lack of party spin. In this thread and the issue as a whole. I have disagreed with decisions in the M.E., but I do not think in any way that this is just more "death to Islam" propaganda.

I know Iran has always been a thorn, but I see no benefit to taking them out at his point. I haven't seen any rush to come up with an agenda to do so from our leadership either. That's good. The situation in Iraq is still salvagable. The last thing we need at this point is a hasty rush to war based on irrational fear.

But make no mistake, I in now way think Iran needs to be treated with kid gloves. They are no different than they were before Iraq. A P.I.T.A. Just because we need a little breather does not mean we need to roll out the red carpet. We should maintain treating it as a seperate issue. There is nothing wrong with Ahmadinejad asking, I still see no reason to give him anything.
