I lost my virginity at 13 with a 13 year old, I guess some would call me a sex offender then? We called it being a horny stupid teenager.
1st - their victims live with it the rest (pain and memories) of their lives. Lives I might add are generally longer than the offenders.
2nd - They all "rehab" and promise to never do it again, however, recidivism rates are around 57% for 1st time sex offenders. Meaning more than 6 out of 10 do it again.

There was a thread that talked about the death penalty for these killers of innocence. Maybe that would be better than plates, but I'll take plates in the meantime.

Might I add, I see few tears for the victims in these responses. Everyone deserves a second chance, Oh they made a mistake. Can the victims get a second chance? Then the offenders should get the same chance they get at moving on and forgetting. Give me a brake, some of you guys must not have kids. If one of these turds did any of those things to my kids, they would meet MR. XD and MR. AK. Just my .02

What if someone borrowed a car of a sex offender?

There are lots of reasons.

Instead I would expand and improve the online database of registered sex offenders and continue to support police officers when they go door to door with flyers to let people know that a sex offender is moving to their area.

I would also require monitoring braclets for the most severe sex criminals, so that we know where they are at all times.

Thanks for all the responses. I was thinking I would get a lot of responses like "Well I HATE sex offenders, but....I don't think this is the way to go..."

Frank
I agree with the part about monitoring braclets, but I think the door to door flyers and the online data bases are just another way of branding people for life. If you have a braclet that is hooked to GPS and plots a chord every minute, you could link any sex offender back to any future sex crimes. Problem solved.

I'm from the mind set that if someone is not rehabilitated they should still be in prison. If you let them loose, they are done with their punishment.

I would argue that murder is more harsh a crime than sex offenses. Not by much, but it is a more harsh crime. We send them to jail for a long long time and when they get out they don't ever have to register with a police data base that goes up on the internet. and police don't come door to door to say "a murderer is moving in 2 blocks down the street."

...and if one of these turds did something to one of your kids you would allow them to go through life without a father? That last line shows how reactionary you are about this subject.

In a murder the victim is gone, in a sex offense the victim has the same loss of innocence yet gets to live with it. which is worse?

....by the way the reactionary comment is cute. Interesting isn't it that our society would punish the father for giving his family justice, while the victims get little or no justice, and the offender gets to pay a price and then "move on" with his life because they have been rehabilitated? Makes my head spin!

I think that an online database is important. It's not like a license plate, where you find out that a person is a sex offender without even looking for sex offenders--you just have to see his/her car.

An online database is a valuable tool for people who have children and are concerned about sex offenders. It is a way to be vigilant and protect our children. It is not permanent either, depending on the laws in your state.

Flyers are also not permanent. The police dept. is just notifying you that a sex offender lives near you.

Sex offenders deserve to be branded in some ways. I just think we should use ways that are constructive and serve the public. Using license plates isn't really helping matters, because people will find out without even trying. We should have ways in place for citizens to find out if sex offenders live in their area.

Thats the way I see it. It`s wrong to continue to punish a person after he`s done his time. If sex offenders are so dangerous, why are they letting them out? Most likely because our prisons are overflowing with people convicted of victim less crimes such as drug possession, buying/ selling guns without a permit, carrying guns without a permit, selling goods and services without a permit, Importing/ exporting without paying taxes, buying cigarettes in one state and selling them in another without paying tax and possessing the required permits etc ad nauseam. In other words crimes against the state. We are operating under rules and laws instead of the Rule of Law. Thats a big part of the problem.

The mentality that you can prevent a crime is the same that is used to ban guns. You simply can not prevent a crime. It’s already illegal so making it more illegal isn't going to do anything. Do you honestly think a child molester that is planning on screwing with your kids is going to drive up to your place with a plate that says I touch kids? No the ones that wish to make their lives better will abide by the law and suffer, the ones that have no plan to rehabilitate simply wont comply and you have accomplished nothing.

And since you think that anybody that doesn't see it your way must not have children, I'm a proud father of 2 boys and a very proud stay at home dad. My entire life is my children, from the moment I wake up to the moment I read them their bedtime story. While I understand and agree whole heartedly in the sentiment that you would kill anybody that touches your kids, I simply cannot understand why you wish to hurt somebody that hasn't.

I work in a church and you would be amazed at how many of these preditors come around here. Some you can spot, others look like the most law abiding, good hearted, folks you would ever want to meet. Advanced warning is necessary IMO. If we didn't do background checks on all our teachers and workers we would have offenders working right now with our kids!

I have counseled and worked with too many of these victims and their families to have much sympathy for their predators.

It says a lot about our society when many of these comments are treating my views with more consternation than sex offenders actions.
