Frank - you da man. Couldn't said it better myself.

FWIW - Dollars spent in the PRIVATE sector are far more productive in getting results than those spent by the PUBLIC (governmental) agencies.

This is only one small example that proves just shows how sick our country has become.

Kids dying of abcessed teeth in the "greatest" country in the history of the world....maybe in some third world state...but here?

And you would begrudge a government handout of 80 friggin' dollars... 80 bucks would have got this young man to a dentist who would have taken care of the tooth...you probably spent more than that on your wife's valentine's day roses. Eighty dollars would have kept a young boy from dying what must have been a very slow and extremely painful death. Can you imagine what this young boy went through?

Hell no.

You don't want anyone to get a government handout.

Well in the end it cost the government $250,000 after the kid spent 2 weeks in the hospital before he died when the infection from the abcessed tooth went to his brain and killed him.

All for a government handout of 80 friggin dollars.

bd
BD, I've got to say I'm coming around to your opinion on this. however I will say this. It is no ones fault but the parents that this child died. My parents had little money when I was a kid I put my hand through a window (tip never try to hit a friend through a window) I was immediately taken to an urgent care facility and given whatever treatment I needed. They didn't have the money for the stitches or to have them removed but they found a way to get it. There is no reason people can't do the same in the country.

I do however feel like its time to start looking into health care for anyone not of working age in certain cases. I'm no economy expert so I don't know how this can be done and not waste a ton of government (IE mine) money because frankly the government sucks at running anything. Obviously this couldn't be available to all. I think my state is working on this so better yet lets leave it to the states.

As to the theme of the original post I will agree it is sad that we NEED to spend that much on defense. I'd much rather see the ratios changed to have more of a percentage to other programs. But I'd also like to see the total money reduced as well.

Most of the problems we face is due to government meddleing. Their attempts at central planning of the economy, and over regulation, not to mention out of control spending all conspire to produce inflation. This process over decades has caused prices to soar. Wages have not kept up. We need to get government under control and out of our way. Let the free market work. I`m with bd as far as the outrage of it all is concerned, but we part ways in the solution. I say chop the federal government off at the knees, let the free market work, and everyone will be better off for it.

Actually I was trying to be easy on you, because like my wife you are Canadian I looked at your links, but as I said before those numbers are deceiving. Also, unlike some on this forum I don`t get offended by anything so feel free to say anything you wish, thats what it`s all about, the exchange of ideas.

They never are in California. I can't speak for the rest of the country, but medical care is never denied to anyone here. All they have to do is show up at the emergency room and wait.

The government has no business being in health care. They can't run their own affairs, why do you want them to have more control????

Truly a sad story, but 80 bucks has nothing to do with it. Our government would spend about $240 to get the $80 from our pockets to the recipient. Multiply that by all the people in the country and sorry, there's no money for anything else. Get the idea out of your head that "government" should have a hand in any of this.

I don't know a single dentist who would turn someone with an abscess away. If there are any, I'll bet they were not that way before the BS that is called Health/Dental Insurance tricked it's way into our lives.

+1 Nick.

I don't use my auto insurance when I get my truck serviced, so why should I use my health insurance for a checkup or a teeth cleaning? If we did away with the nickel and dime stuff, medical care would be affordable again.
