Thumbs up Lifeboat Ethics: the Case Against Helping the Poor

http://www.garretthardinsociety.org/...ping_poor.html

I recently posted this essay in another thread, but I thought it deserved a thread of its own. What do you folks think about this essay by Garrett Hardin?

Hardin wrote this over 30 years ago and as you can see, he predicted exactly what would happen to our country in terms of immigration. He also talks about how we are actually making the world worse off by giving massive amounts of foreign aid. He poses several ethical questions about the pressing problems of overpopulation and hunger. I think you will all find this essay very interesting.

Perhaps it is noble to try and help those who are less fortunate than others. However, in the process, are we actually making things worse for us and for those week seek to help?

This essay does an EXCELLENT job of summarizing our current illegal immigration problem. I encourage you all to read it and post your comments in this thread. The lifeboat methaphor is one of the best I've ever read. I've been a fan of Hardin for quite some time and I think that many of you here would appreciate his work.

I've read this before.... it's rightness or wrongness is undeterminable I think, and a very personal answer. Than said, it is a very logical and intelligent piece.

Logic does shine brightly in that essay, that's for sure.

There must be some other Hardin fans or people who have read this eassy out there!

I guess it might be too long for people to bother to read. It is worth it, though.

Slavery was and is wrong plain and simple. Anyone who doesn't understand that needs to have their moral compass repaired.

The Confederate flag, for all your posturing, has become a symbol of repression of black Americans. Flying it is offensive to a large number of Americans.
Poor officer Frank. He must be dying to get in on the thrill of referring to the American Civil War as the "War of Northern Aggression". LOL - But he's from Maine. What will the poor boy do??????

This is the kind of thinking from the far-left that could get us all killed.

Since you obviously find my words so worthy as to make them part of your own self-definition, perhaps you could attempt a little context? I do not recall mentioning any response to "communist aggression in the '80's. But I know you research everything very thoroughly, so how about some disclosure?

You provide a link to the thread in which BD talked about "negotiating" with Bin Laden (or whatever it is about...it has transformed to more written "white noise" for me at this point. Repetition, same old same ol' -- - endlessly. Don't you get bored with yourself? EVER?

I do remember saying I had spent some time recently in places like Myanmar and Vietnam. It was those places I was referring to when I wrote:
"The people don't like it and so I figure it will run it's course as it did in the USSR eventually. Why should we pay to stop a system that just doesn't work? That will die a natural death?"

Having never been in any communist nation during the 1980s, I have no idea what the basis of your statement regarding the 80s was

I guess accuracy in your "Zombie Journalism" isn't quite the big concern it is for you normally when it does not fit your "score-keeping" method of "winning" arguments (to call them "debates" is to insult the whole concept of that word).

Peace,
D.

Yeah, it really is an interesting read. It's one of the most logical things I've ever read.

What does the "war of northern agression" and Mark S. have to do with Garrett Hardin? Perhaps you responded in the wrong thread

What does my signature and your comments about communism have to do with Garrett Hardin? If you wish to discuss my signature and your appeasement politics regarding communism, please do so in the thread where the discussion began. Why are you continuing a discussion that started in one thread in a different thread?

Why do you like to hijack threads? As I recall, you even hijacked bd's birthday thread.

Here is the link to the proper thread:

government true-isms

I'll even bump it for you so that you can find it easier.

Please continue the discussion in that thread, because this one is about Garrett Hardin and "lifeboat ethics".

Thank you,

Frank
