Pot Politics pi*s me off.
On one side you have dreamy eyed stoners, ascribing mythical qualities to the humble cannibus plant. "Its seeds produce an oil that is a drop in replacement or diesel" "It produces the strongest natural rope!" "It can be used for supperior paper than wood pulp. . ."
On the other side you have intolerant iconoclasts who either say "It is illegal for a reason!" and can't honestly say why it is illegal, or want to keep it illegal due to interests in the paper, alcohol, or tobacco industries. The real problem that exists is that marijuana is such a taboo subject in some circles that the research that needs to be done on it is not being done for fear of the "WoD" angle. Glah. I gotta agree with you, I just don't understand it. I've never smoked pot, so I can't really say what it's like, (not "holier than thou", just never really had the desire to). But I don't really see the difference between pot and alcohol/tobacco. To have them legal and pot illegal, seems hypocritical to me.
Perhaps it's b/c if they legalized marijuana, they would have to change the ATF to ATM, and that acromym is already taken. Pete

Though I do not smoke pot, nor do I drink 'regularly', I feel it is an 'attitude adjuster' no more harmful than drinking.....dole it out in pre rolled cigarettes.

If the FED cannot tax it, it is illegal. I think pot should be legal, although I don't smoke. It makes people lazy, I have seen that many times over. While they sleep, others can work and make money.

I also believe that the legalization of pot would have an impact on the more dangerous drugs such as Meth.

I say legalize it. I'd drink a lot less and, as a result, save a lot more money.

The drug war has become an economic necessity. The main reason there hasn't been federal legislation proposed is no politician wants to be responsible for that much damage to our economy.
The figures are that somewhere around 40% of prison inamates are non violent drug offenders. Figure that as if drugs where made illegal that 40% of our law enforcment and prison employee's would no longer need a job. The companies that supply equipment to law enforcement would have their income cut by 40%. DEA would see a much larger layoff. Other goverment lawenforcment would likewise see layoffs. Border patrol, military spending in south america etc etc. If regulated it would take a decade or so for those jobs to switch over to that area. Also a private sector business of some kind would undoubtable arise to feed the demand for drugs but that takes time. It would only be a very short term hit to our economy but what politician wants to be in office when the economy goes south? Even if it is a short term speed bump and even if it leeds to billions less in goverment spending that can be used for other "vital" social programs? I am a Libratarian by nature and as such wish to see all my liberties taken back. But i'm realistic enough to see why even the poloticians that suposedly support our view have been leary of acting on that beleif. When it comes to politics, I was taught to always follow the money and the aswer would be there. |
