Hollyroller, just like the constitution says, we were born with certain God given rights, but someone has to defend and preserve those rights and it requires a blood sacrifice at times. Who's going to defend those rights? It sure isn't protestors, poets, politicians, and lawyers.

Yes, some join the military because either they are bored with or can't find a decent civilan job. That's always been a factor especially during bad economic times but that's not the majority and certainly not the norm since 911.

People join the military for various reasons but the vast majority, in my experience, join more out a sense of duty or willingness to serve. If one stays past their initial enlistment, you can bet that's a given and it's all not about the money.

Our military is better compensated than in the past, and thankfully so. When I was in I remember military families being on food stamps. Do you have any idea how demeaning and demoralizing it is to be serving your country putting you a$$ on the line and ready to be called into combat at a moment's notice while being separated from your wife and children, thousands of miles away, while you wonder where their next meal is coming from? You have enough to worry about just doing your job, let alone that. I'm glad our military is better compensated today. They should be!

Don't just look at dollars and cents. What you don't see is the bullets and the bombs, the hazardous duty, the long months at sea or tdy, and the thousands of miles separating you from your family, friends and loved ones while you defend and preserve America, her citizens and their freedoms. What dollar figure do you put on that? Yes, your even defending the dope smokin, latte sippin, birkenstock wearin, war protestin, long haired Deadheads, and all other ungreatful Americans as well.

Try it sometime and then come back here and tell me about military pay compensation.

To quote you, "Is it blasphemy to disrespect a veteran"? Well I don't know about blasphemy but it's ungreatful as hell at the very least.
You won't just "getaway with it" without some sort of retort from this veteran. The degree of retort being in direct proportion to your degree of blasphemy, mind you.

All, I am not scoffing at or disrespecting veterans or their service... and I am "trying it sometime", in fact all the time. I was merely commenting on what I believe to be the motives of most service members I have come across. It seems as though it has become sacred ground to disagree or to question such matters and that is what's troubling.

SSgt, Active Duty USAF,13yrs.

In addition, I currently qualify for food stamps and see nothing demoralizing about it. What I dont get in $$$ I get back in free health/dental care, access to base facilities, mil discounts, etc.

I know that I am rich compared to most and for that I am grateful. The USAF has provided me with a good life despite my many deployments / hardships etc (just got back in Feb). I am not to be elevated above a politician, a cop, or anyone else who does what they have to provide for their family. I am certainly not above being disrespected by someone who does not hold the views that I do, in fact I expect it.

My job is important, but it is just a job. I will continue to serve with distinction for years to come and will continue to respect the views of the opposition that I protect daily with my service. God will keep me and preserve me despite what others may do to me. The rights He gave me are not temporal and can not be taken away. God bless you all and thank you for your responses.

Firstly, thanks you for your service. I had you pegged for anti-military so you got me on that one.

I'm not sure about you qualifying for food stamps given your E5 over 12, particularly if your single and living in the barracks with a chow pass. If your married with kids and your spouse doesn't work and your living off base, I can see you having a rough time of it. No matter, that's your business not mine.

I'm not saying servicemen/women or veterans are to be put on a pedestal. My point was that their service shouldn't be disrespected and neither should yours. It doesn't make them better than anyone else but it does set them apart from your average "joe citizen". Of course, LEO, Firefighters, Nurses, etc. I hold the same regard for.

Be proud of your service. I'm proud of your for serving.

Then there's the U of O which is a bastion of liberalism and perhaps many of those non-resident graduates stayed after college. The more leinient pot laws might be a small factor as well.

Not stating fact just opinon supported by my wife who's originally from there and her family living there.

That's exactly where most of the rioters during the WTO "protests" came from. Bad enough our city got trashed, it was from people that didn't even live here!
