They are out there, whether or not people want to admit it. Many of the far-leftists and neo-socialists aren't quite left enough to be considered communists, but many of them are. They all share the dangerous ideas of the state controlling and delegating everything, and wealth redistribution. Frank

Our military is a volunteer force, there are various ways to get put out if one chose to. Military members are very well taken care of, its a good job w/great benefits. I guess I dont totally understand the "how dare they" part. Few military members join and stay in solely because they are selflessly fighting for the cause of freedom to all, they do it because its a secure job w/great perks. Is it blasphemy to disrespect a veteran?

All the rights we have and the freedoms we treasure were earned by members of our military. That is something I was taught at a young age by my father and my grandfather who each also served in their time. If not for our veterans; past and present, the nation we live in would not exist. We all owe them a great debt. As to the point that the men are joining and staying in because it's a secure job w/ great perks....These men and women are enlisting and RE-enlisting into a WARZONE. Is that what you mean by secure? Is going weeks eating MRE's, doing without showers, and having people shoot at you one of the great perks you mentioned? If they didn't believe in what they were doing they wouldn't be re-enlisting, not with people trying to kill them. Maybe they're doing it for the great pay My intention of this post is not to be disrespectful to you holyroller; but to many of us who have served, this is something we feel very strongly about.

No disrespect taken and none intended here either. I understand your feelings and I respect them. I believe that my rights are given from God Himself and to Him alone am I indebted. If our rights are given and sustained by the military, what happens if our rights are taken? Is that the their doing as well, is it their fault? The Armed Forces is recruiting and retaining people with bonuses, big ones. Nobody thinks they will be the ones to get killed, they believe they will be the exception...and most are. Many military members do their job and complain the whole time, they keep on doing it because its their job and they get paid to do it. Some get shot at, but most dont. All get $$$ for housing, food, school, and yes...getting shot at. Before a member deploys he/she speaks mainly of the $$$ they will make and that 20 yr retirement check is what keeps them going. If they re-up downrange they get their bonus tax free! For those who arent satisfied with all of that, they get ou as soon as they are able. I would estimate that 1 in 20 military current Active Duty joined primarily to fight for their country, although Im sure it was different in times past (not sarcasm). Just my opinion, God bless, Mike.

Holyroller,
Apparently you must believe that just because you have God-given rights that they can't be stripped from you. If that is what you think then you are sadly mistaken. God fearing people have had to fight for their rights for millenia and now is no different. Those that fight for your rights are compensated, that is true, (an E-5 in Iraq gets about $3,740/mo or $44,880/yr) but what do they put on the line to defend your rights? I can give a short list. Family. Friendships. Homes. Stability. Certainty. Comfort. Security. Sanity. Life. The reason that many troops think about the money they will make while deployed is because they make squat while NOT deployed, (the same E-5 makes about $2,812/mo or $33,744/yr after taxes stateside) and they want to look at the bright side of being in a nasty, dangerous place. Disrespecting a veteran is disrespecting honor, duty, country and the sacrifice given by all current and past veterans. If you disrespect a current, living, 19 yr old veteran, you have disrespected the millions of other veterans that have ever served. Including me. I served for 21 years. I did 4 years in the active Army. I spent the other 17 in the South Dakota National Guard. I missed lots of family birthdays, graduations, and even funerals during my 21 years. I served with distinction in Iraq with others just as committed as I. I went on missions never knowing if I would ever speak to my family again. I went because I believed in my mission. I put up with squalor and filth for weeks because we only had water for drinking and not bathing. I put up with 4 hours of sleep per night for months and drove all day in 140 degrees to haul food, water, ammo, medical supplies, comfort items and civilian relief supplies. The whole time I was in Iraq my wife was a nervous wreck because she never knew what I was doing or where I was. She didn't know if I was alive or dead. My deployment was a living hell for her. So, if you disrespect a veteran, you are also disrespecting the sacrifices made by the families of veterans as well. I retired last month. I cried for the entire ceremony. Some for the loss of comradeship I felt, some for the ending of a proud and honorable career. But not one tear was shed for the loss of income or benefits. They are insignificant compared to the pride I have in doing my duty so you can feel safe and secure knowing your freedoms are your's to keep. So, if you feel the need to scoff at my service and those of my fellow service members. Go ahead. I hope it makes you happy. Just remember, God gave you rights. The US military is there to preserve them for you.
