Wal-Mart wants you to conserve energy

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/02/business/02bulb.html

This is an interesting article about Wal-Mart getting behind compact fluorescent lighting. They want to get the swirly bulbs in 100 million homes. I have about 10-15% of my lights converted so far, so maybe Wal-Mart is where to go to finish the other 85%.

Tricky situation.

Hmm... more mercury in the water, lost American jobs versus saving $30 in energy costs over the life of the bulb, decreased greenhouse gases, and increased initial investment.

Sounds like a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

Although, I'll give Walmart props for trying to increase sales on a product that has been under performing for a long while. Very Creative!

i look at it more as a step towards making the average american consumer aware of the need for energy consumption and more conservative use in general...

Drug Emporium in southern California is selling 15 Watt (= 75 Watt incandescent) and 23 Watt (= 100 Watt incandecent) compact flourescent bulbs for 50 cents each (subsidized by Southern California Edison).

I converted all but two of the lights in my house to compact flourescents about five years ago. This cut my electric bill by about $40 a month.

I've been using these lights in my apartment for over a year. As soon as we moved in, I put them in. I got a good deal on them at menards. I believe I got 4 for $6 at the time on sale. I don't feel as guilty when I leave a light on now at least. The only thing that takes getting use to, is they have to warm up if they have been off for a while. So the light output isn't at it's max for about a minute. I like them though, and enjoy a little bit of savings on my electric bill too.

Hmm...interesting. I think I might go to MEIJER and pick me up a few. I hate Wal-Mart. (I'm not trying to start another one of those threads)

I've got about 2/3rds of my lights converted. I've just always liked them. Bought mine at Ikea though. Don't remember how much. But, I want to say 3 for $2 or somethign like that. A bunch of different styles and configurations as well.

That's actually one of my favorite features. I can wake up and turn on the bedroom light in the morning and it'll gently warm up as opposed to going from 0 to full power with the flick of a switch.

These bulbs are great. I buy mine at Lowes and have noticed that prices are coming down a little while selection has increased significantly, e.g. you can now buy 3-way bulbs. I must take exception to Krackel's comment that this is "...a solution to a problem that doesn't exist". If you think energy isn't a problem then you are grossly misinformed. Possibly I misunderstood the context of your remark.

But them, don'y buy them. Its your choice. Personally I think this technology makes alot of economic sense.
