Theodore Roosevelt's ideas on Immigrants and on being an AMERICAN in 1907.
"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people." Theodore Roosevelt 1907 Made sense then, makes sense now........what's missing is LEADERSHIP.

You are also forgetting that in Teddy's time there were no entitlements. Immigrants who come here can be dirt poor in their own countries and that is often real poverty, a life and death matter. Come here, and being poor may mean some struggles but not to survive, only to live comfortably. So, in Teddy's time, the immigrants who came knew they had to make good for themselves or else perish. I am not saying that immigrants, illegal and legal, who come here do not work, they do and very hard but they can be poor in America and still live a lavish lifestyle compared to what they had back home. Get rid of entitlements and the minimum wage and you will stop illegal immigration, no need to take more money form us to build a wall or hire more border patrol agents.
As for the language bit, well soon Spanish will replace English in large parts of the country. I already speak Spanish so I do not necessarily see it as bad. Just know that it is government, with its lax border enforcement coupled with the dual magnets of high minimum wages (comparatively to other countries) and generous entitlement programs, that has done more to create the current situation than any single employer or political/ethnic/activist group.

Speaking of Reagan, has anyone seen the fairly new documentary about his struggle between good and evil called "In the Face of Evil"? WOW--what a great movie! The movie is about the struggle against communism, but SO MANY things in the movie apply today it is scary! www.inthefaceofevil.com Frank

My major fear is the fact that a weak leader such as Bush invites all kinds of trouble down the road for the people. All our elected "representitives" think about today is how their decisions will play to the media and their future inside the Beltway. The "folks back home" be damned! It's a mean situition and it isn't going to get any better come January, with the newly elected moderate Dems fighting their own super liberal leadership - a MAJOR disconnect here.
