European Socialists Eager to Work with U.S. Democrats

Kudos to the Democrat Congressional majority, they not only won the hearts and minds of our terrorist enemies, they have now earned the praise and admiration of European Socialist Leaders!

Someone better put extra guards around our Constitution; the Democrats are poised to spread their socialism in this country.

December 7, 2006;

OPORTO, Portugal (Reuters) - European Socialists promised on Thursday to work to rebuild Europe's strategic alliance with the United States now that the Democrats control Congress after last month's elections.

Socialist leaders attending a meeting of the European Socialist Party pledged that with the Democrats on the rise, strong ties could be renewed with the United States after years of cool relations with Republican President George W. Bush.

Howard Dean, chairman of the national committee of the U.S. Democratic Party, is attending the two-day conference together with the leaders of leftist governments of several countries and party leaders from across Europe.

"We are not anti-American, we want the real America, your America," former Danish Prime Minister Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, president of the European Socialist Party, said in remarks directed at Dean.

The Democrats gained control of both houses of Congress for the first time since 1994 in the mid-term elections, reshaping the political landscape ahead of the 2008 presidential race.

"Europe needs an America that is back on track," said Portuguese Socialist Prime Minister Jose Socrates, whose country is hosting the meeting.

"We need, today more than ever, to reinforce and renew the strategic alliance between the United States and Europe," Socrates said. "We know that a stronger Democratic Party is key for this to happen."

Socialists, or centre-left governments, currently hold or share power in just over half of Europe.

Many European governments, not just Socialist ones, have above all been angered by Bush's war in Iraq and what has been seen as the U.S. failure to work with allies in international affairs.

They expressed hopes after last month's election for a new era of open dialogue on a more equal footing with Washington and the Bush administration during the final two years of his presidency.

Socrates said Dean's Democrats "should know that they can count on European Socialists" for support.

I urged you to vote Republican, remember that please.

I guess the 22 countries that fight along side our forces in Iraq are not good enough for you?

What real ally refuses to help us fight the war on terror? None as far as I am concerned.

There are NOT 22 countries fighting alongside our forces.

Of the 22 countries in Iraq, 4 of them have committed fighting personnel. One of them (Denmark) is one of those "socialist heathen" countries that you shiver in your slippers about. The remaining 18 are supply, logistical and go-fer types that are looking to get out.

Funnygun,

You've already proven the Constitution is not worth defending in your opinion.

Don't you stand for anything?

Now you appear to be saying the United States should not want allies like the Danes and the Portugese.

I guess you're happy with our allies - the Russians and the Chinese.

You sure do change your stances a lot.

I guess I should ignore this propaganda then?

Iraq Coalition Troops
Non-US Forces in Iraq - November 2006
The size and capabilities of the Coalition forces involved in operations in Iraq has been a subject of much debate, confusion, and at times exageration. As of August 23, 2006, there were 22 non-U.S. military forces contributing armed forces to the Coalition in Iraq. These 22 countries were: Albania, Armenia, Australia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, El Salvador, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, South Korea, and the United Kingdom.

However, in the August 23, 2006 Iraq Weekly Status Report (Slide 27) the State Department listed 27 foreign countries as contributing troops to the Coalition in Iraq. The additional four countries were Japan, Portugal, Singapore and the Ukraine.

In addition, that same Weekly Status Report listed 34 countries (including the US) as maintaining personnel in Iraq (as part of the Coalition, UNAMI, or NATO). The State Department reported that Fiji was contributing troops though UNAMI and that Hungary, Iceland, Slovenia, and Turkey were assisting with the NATO training mission. However, it is unclear whether Hungary actually maintained any forces in Iraq as part of NATO or UNAMI since its government announced the complete withdrawal of troops in December 2004.

In testimony before the Senate Armed Services committee on August 3, 2006, Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld described the coalition in Iraq as composed of 34 allies (plus the US).

As of June 13, 2006, MNF-I reported that 27 countries (including the US) maintained responsibility over the six major areas of Iraq. Since that time, Japan has withdrawn all of its forces from Iraq.

For the purposes of this tally, only countries that contribute troops as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom are counted

The coalition may have been small, but the people from the Iron Curtain countries, no doubt, remember very well what it is like to live under a vicious dictator. Better than the fat and happy French, Germans and Dutch. (Should we be taking foreign policy lessons from those folks anyway? They brought us the first two World Wars...did they not?)

I would love for some of you that are enamoured of European styled socialism to talk to my Swedish cousins for five minutes. They'll tell you how "wonderful" it is to live under such a system...free healthcare and all. They laugh at the fact that some Americans find their system appealing and wish the USA to be more European.

All four of my cousins would love to move here and would do so in a heartbeat if they could. At first, I found this hard to believe, but after they explained their high taxation rates and the fact that their costs of living are so high, they will be 70 before they can own their own homes, I understand why.

Capitlaism has its trappings, but socialism is twice as bad, but some always see the grass on the other side of the fence.

No question there, Brick; my people fled here from one'a them unpronounceable Eastern Bloc countries. You bet we remember.

Not real sure I've heard anyone here suggest deep admiration for "European styled socialism," Brick, so yer kinda preachin to the choir here. However, if any of your Swedish cousins are of the female persuasion, blonde, good-lookin', and lonely, I sure wouldn't mind spendin' some time with 'em.
