Like the sun rising in the east every morning...it did not take long for someone to draw the conclusion that if you did not go to school with other races, you were a redneck or hillbilly or some sort of unsophisicated cretin. This is the left's view of society in general: that we're all some sort of uncapable morons that NEED their "direction" in order to have what they percieve as a full life, otherwise, we'll all become hillbillys without their benevolent direction. You leftists just kill me with that nonsense. "if you don't put multiculturalism first...you're a racist" thats the general line of thinking. Thats really sad.
My view is that we need to teach the kids the basics FIRST and let them work out their social skills with those that look different than they do on their own nickle. I want kids that attend public schools in the USA to be as educated and prepared for the future job market as those kids in other nations. I thought we were all supposed to IGNORE the race issue. Become blind ot color or race in general...right? It should not matter? Treat everyone the same...isn't that what we all want? Well, by ignoring the racial makeup of the classroom altogether, this should be EXACTLY what we should be doing, but the left calls us out as racist hillbillies for even suggesting it. Amazing! Sure, school kids can learn about other cultures and they should be taught about world history and the various countries and cultures around the world, but what does the racial makeup of the classrooms have to do with this? Nothing. None of this should be put ahead of learning the basics. I never said one should not learn about other cultures. I was only asking that the public school systems stick to preparing ALL kids for the future with basics they'll need to compete and leave out the social experimentations. Again, this is all BS, designed to divide everybody up and keep us from recognizing the poor job overall, that our public education system is really doing and fixing the problems. - Brickboy240 PS: I'd LOVE to send my kid to a private school, but its outrageously expensive and since I am forced to pay public school taxes, it is not possible for me to pay this as well as private school tuition. This is the argument for vouchers...something else the left and teachers unions are very much against.

I dunno... if you homogonize your schools (and you can, no argument from me) to be all one race, things...change.
I grew up in a very white town. Consider: I was taught that Columbus discovered America, a great moment in history. Even then I wondered how he could "discover" a land if people were already there, but that was their story and they were sticking to it. Native Americans view this as the start of "the invasion," a tragedy that signaled the end of their existence. Same history, two different views depending on what culture you are stewed in. Of all the standard subjects taught, history is the most screwed up. Teaching different histories about the same events causes divides in our culture that can't heal easily. As far as forced integration goes, I don't like it. If you want to shield your child from having to share a classroom with people from other races, you should be able to do that. I don't agree with doing that, I just agree with preserving your right to. |

Depending on WHERE you learned about this period, it's either: 1. The Civil War (Northern States) 2. The War Between The States (Southern States) 3. The War Of Northen Aggression (Texas) Now, I spent parts of my childhood in all three areas. Went to school and studied history (it was called that back then - not "Social Studies" as it is today) in all these areas. Talk about confused! Up north, there were plenty of "people of color" in the schools I went to. They didn't socialize with us, we didn't socialize with them. They had their own entrance to the building, we had ours. Our paths didn't cross, either in school or outside. Down south, there were no non-whites in the school. They had their own school, we had ours. Again, our paths didn't cross. In Texas, we had about 15% of the school as Spanish speakers, several Native Americans (both we and they referred to them as Indians), and several Orientals. We all pretty much hung out with people of our own culture. As one of three kids from Northen backgrounds, we were more isolated than anyone else. Yet, in all areas that I lived in, we all pretty much got along. No race, no culture, no tension. In grade school, we were into sports and building model airplanes and rockets. Not a lot of time to hate each other. In high school, we all chased skirts and didn't have any interest in building a hatred for each other.

Quota based systems in schools or anywhere else is racism. Doesn't matter who it happens to or the color of their skin. We need to live by these words, not just preach them for set-asides for a particular group. "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." ?? |

Good point Tom and BD.
One of the areas I wish I knew a lot more about was the civil rights movement. However there is that fancy quote almost everyone knows. Quote:
I'd love to see it shot down.
