Minimum Wage issue in Ohio

There is a minimum wage (MW) hike issue on the ballot in my home state of Ohio this November. And the gun-grabbing Democrats are making it a big issue as usual since it is not their money they are playing with, and it appeals to bleeding-heart liberals and the stupid.

The increase would take money from one worker, the employer, and give it to another worker (employee) but the employer would get nothing in return. I think it is wrong for voters to decide to forced workers to take a pay cut to give another worker a pay raise for nothing.

http://www.bls.gov/cps/minwage2005tbls.htm#2

According to these labor statistics, 26,000 workers out of 3,403,000 hourly workers in Ohio or 0.8% are paid minimum wage. But the labor union activist propaganda is saying it will affect anywhere from 450,000 to 700,000 workers???

From the list of job types that earn MW, nationally, I found these: servers, ushers, parking lot attendants, construction laborers, amusement part attendants, general office clerks. I was hoping to see more workers in the department and food store industry making MW since that would mean Wal-Mart would benefit from a MW hike.

In Ohio the MW law does not affect employers with gross sales of less than $150,000.00 per year.

See job type stats here:
http://www.bls.gov/ncs/ocs/sp/ncbl0831.pdf

But Labor unions, I’ve been told, are FOR the MW hike because most labor contracts apparently are based on the minimum wage so if the MW is raised then union workers will also be entitled to free money. Big Labor is really pushing for this in Ohio. Now I know why. And if this is true then Wal-Mart should benefit greatly in the long run because its heavily unionized competition will be forced by their union contracts to increase their labor costs (with nothing in return) and have no choice but to eventually raise prices to compensate for their pay cut. In this respect, the MW hike will be good for Wal-Mart.

Personally, I am against the MW hike on principle. I do not think it is right for citizens to vote to take earned money from one worker and give it to another and get nothing in return. This is not like voting for a tax since we are voting to tax ourselves. The MW hike costs the voter nothing to take someone else’s earnings.

It’s a win-win situation for me though since if the MW passes, Wal-Mart should benefit. And I support Wal-Mart’s efforts to make tons and tons of profits that benefit its millions of owners – most of us.

When have you tried to live on minimum wage?

It is sad how the unions and such have messed up the issue but in principle I think any worker who works full-time should be able to rent an apartment and eat. Call me crazy.

As for Wal-Mart they and their Chinese Communist suppliers can rot in hell. It has been at least 10 years since Wal-Mart had a conscience. Get with the times! I hope you enjoy your cheap crap as you fund our future enemies. Buy local, pay a fair price, and tip your waitresses and we will all be more prosperous in the long run, please.

The minimum wage was not designed to provide a living wage.

So you want the government to mandate wage levels? Do you realize what that means?

Actually, Wal-Mart sells the same quality products that most other stores sell. And I support our LOCAL Wal-Mart where friends and neighbors make a living.

Don't you support the terrorists every time you fill your car with gas derived from imported oil from Arab nations? Like our future enemy Iran?

I married a waitress from the restaurant I worked for, so I always tip 20% because I make the decision.

I agree most stores today sell Chinese crap. That's why I'm so kool-aid about it. Farm and Fleet all the way baby!!

As for mandating wages, why not mandate a minimum? We subsidize businesses all the time. Take farmers and disaster reimbusements for instance. Only mega-farms who lose more than hundreds of thousands of dollars are entitled to subsidies. Think that was orchestrated by big agri-business lobbyists maybe? I see Wal-Mart and most other big employers getting tax-breaks all the time to lure them into a city. If government is willing to bail out airlines and let corps off on taxes, why not ensure workers make a living wage? If you can't pay a worker enough to live, fire some suits or actually limit CEO payoffs. I like the model where the highest-paid individual in a company can only make 10 or 15 times the lowest-paid. I don't care how smart or wonderful an executive is, as a worker he cannot work 200 times harder than the janitor does.

I think Americans are conveniently forgetting that the rise of the middle class in Britain and America (from when we were just colonies until about 1962) was the platform on which property rights and eventually individual freedoms were built upon. Tom, you sound like a believer in Reaganomics. Am I right? "Pay the rich folks and they will spread it around while we all live off the corporate tit.", right? Riiiggghhhtt..

Just like we are supposed to trust the government to look out for personal rights and guard the Constitution..Riiiighhhtt..

I'm ready to share the cool-aid, plenty to go around. (All in good convo, I like the discussion.)

There is a big difference between tax incentives to business and mandating living wages.

A tax incentive to a business allows it to keep more of ITS OWN EARNINGS – that is not welfare; the business EARNS the money and is induced to invest in a town so people can get jobs. Without many tax incentives – NO JOBS.

Welfare is free money, you don't have to earn it.

A mandatory living wage is a TAX on business. The Business is forced to overpay for labor so the business will go elsewhere to invest. Taxes chase businesses away. Mandating the distribution of wealth is a mighty slippery socialist slope, the same slope the Democrats use to buy votes with other people’s money.

Your populist demagoguery and ideas to socialize our society and economy are quite disturbing.

I guess before tax incentives were invented there were no jobs (according to tom).
