And your right. I don't think there are many people who relish the idea of going to war. However, don't take that to mean I'd move to Canada.
Well I have been acting like your drill Sargent recently.

I'm gonna do more than that when this heat lets up. Get away from the forum a bit and start a new life out in the garage. I smell a garage project coming up. Maybe I'll weld up a brush guard for my truck.

I've been digging fence post holes all day. Yippy! Presently waiting for the concrete to set.

Do believe it was "Slick Willy" that started that craze - remember the "deals" he worked out with the DRNK?

Can anyone remember Neville Chamberlin, getting off the plan after meeting with a certain German leader (believe his initials were AH?), holding his umbrella up in the air and shouting "I bring peace in our time!"?

All he bought was a little time - and passed the potato off to the next guy (sad to say, just like GWB is going to do with Iraq).

OK, I'll bite.

Aside from the fact that I don't actually recall Billy turning a blind eye to Saddam's reclaiming of Alsace-Lorraine, or any other imperialistic adventures, there are the subtleties to Chamberlin's attempt at appeasement. The first is that the British, as a whole were incensed that they had cavalierly rode into WW I which they generally viewed as an insane loss of life. He was proceeding in a manner in which the majority in his country wanted. Both England and France were devastated after the war and there was serious doubt that they had the men, material, or spirit for another war with Germany. The more subtle suggestion has been that Chamberlin and Daladier were willing to give up the Rhine and Sudetenland with the belief that he would then turn his attention toward Russia and leave them alone.

Thus ends my history opinion..... for the moment!

You are correct. Chamberlain was reflecting the majority opinion in England at the time (majority opinion in the US also). Having said that, I think the history lesson is that given a choice, the majority will usually opt for the least difficult choice whether that be war or peace. IMHO

Can't quite agree with you on this one. My remarks about Slick Willy concern the fact (well documented) that he (and his administration) laid out several attractive alternatives for the DRNK without any intention of every delivering on these. These alternatives and inducements were designed to get the DRNK to stop work on any nuc development. The DRNK agreed. Willy (and Co) did this to buy time to slip out of the White House (with all the china, silverware, lighting fixtures, cloths hangers, etc., etc., etc.....), thus passing the potato on the GWB (who has proven less than capible of handling a potato of this size/shape/texture/heat.

The Chamberlin issue was never really popular in England, but prehaps that position is based on 20/20 hindsite by their militery leaders who published after WW2. I may be old, but not old enough to remember pre-1939.

I suspect Billiam may have been hoping Kim Jong Il would die or the North Korean economy would collapse USSR style.

I think the answer to Nuclear proliferation is to work on SDI short term and to colonize space ASAP. Both endeavors seemed ridiculously expensive 5 years ago, but compared to trillion-dollar wars to save people who will just kill each other anyway, both are a bargain.
