Interview with a Combat Veteran

For every piece of fluff propaganda written by an Army Journalist safely behind the walls of the Green Zone there are true stories coming out of Iraq from G.I.s that are out in the field day in and day out. Here's an interview from one of those heroes.

The mark of an exceptionally well written book is that the reader is transported into the story. You stand in the shoes of the main character[s] and see through their eyes. Chasing Ghosts: A Soldier's Fight For America From Baghdad To Washington is just such a book. In this epic story, the shoes are combat boots and the eyes you peer through are those of Iraq War vet Lieutenant Paul Rieckhoff, caught in the middle of a burgeoning, violent insurgency that war apologists did not plan for and even denied, as American casualties mounted.


Chasing Ghosts--[Incoming] Iraqi fire continued ... My sniper had an enemy fighter in the crosshairs of the Walmart hunting sight he had bought on his own. "LT, he's got an AK and a white shirt. I got the shot."

"Take him out," I responded. Crack. The guy slumped.

"Another mother****er in the open", the sniper reported. "I got the shot, LT." Crack. I saw a figure in black disappear behind the SUV, and assumed it was a hit. (Page 100-101).

In the aftermath of September 11, New York native Paul Rieckhoff volunteered to carry the fight to Al Qaeda. In 2003 he found himself instead sitting on a chartered military transport as the commander of 3rd Platoon, Bravo Company, destined for Iraq; which is where the book, and this interview, begin.

I thought you guys said that we can't lump all the military in one group? So isn't it safe to assume that while he may not agree with it others do? Or are they just the lock-step war mongers?

I think you guys all need to all realize there are different views in every group.
