I've heard McCain's argument that if we change the rules for treating prisoners, our soldiers can very well be subject to the same rule bending that we've followed.

I'm sure if our soldiers are captured in Iraq they will get the same treatment as the Gitmo prisoners

Don't the other guys drag our guys thru the streets, after they have beat them, and behead them on tv. What rights should we afford to them?

If we do everything they do I guess that doesn't make us much different than them, does it? I guess I'd like to think that 's not the case.

You can measure a society by how it treats its prisoners. Dostoevsky

Have you killed anyone? Helen Tasker
Yeah, but they were all bad. Harry Tasker True Lies

Torture is torture is torture. It doesn't matter what the other side is doing or who it is you are holding (even thought that vast majority of detainees hold little if any intelligence value and torture has yet to demonstrate any real effectiveness as an intelligence gathering technique.) Using the "they're bad people" argument would necessarily mean that you would understand Bin and the Boys torturing a Major they captured. Not that they probably won't, but you can't complain about it if you believe your own argument.

Also, please do not confuse the discussion of torture with the living conditions in Gitmo. One is a discussion about physical and psychological abuse and the other is not.
