That Evil Big oil up to its old tricks!

I just saw this on Fox. can you believe that Evil big oil!?

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,213877,00.html

The short version: Under Clinton the interior department set up oil drilling programs. Under the agreement royalties stop being paid once oil went over $36 a barrel. they estimate $10 billion in lost royalties. so those damn evil oil companies are negotiating to give the feds a partion of it anyway.

Personally if I was head of one of the comanies I'd issue a polite "bugger off".

People that are angry at the price of gasoline and the roller coaster ride of pricing that has become the SOP of this market really need to focus most of their anger not at the oil companies but squarely at our government.

Sure, the oil companies are making big profits, but blame for the up and down price spikes and the lack of true alternative choices and continuance of dependence on foreign oil sources can be squarely laid at the feet of our own damn government.

However, the media and the leftists, anti-capitalists, class warriors and even our elected officials love to blame OPEC or the oil companies and use them as a class warfare tool and focus of anger for the masses, because it works so damn well. Those Senate hearings into the high gas prices and high profits, where they grilled the oil execs was a total sham and really laughable. If one digs deep enough and does enough reading and poking around, its really easy to surmise that most of the reason we have the pricing and system we have are directly related to actions by our government and the system THEY set up and control.

I just wish everyone that is angry about high gas prices (and rightly so) would direct their anger in the proper direction. Sure, the oil companies are a part of the big picture, but mostly, these guys are reacting to actions put in place by the US government.

However, we will most likely never see the blame put on the govt. by the leftists and anti-capitalists, because its easier to further their political agenda by fostering hatred for and placing all the blame on big oil and those that drive SUVs. Placing blame on the US govt. does nothing for their agenda, but its easy to ratchet up rage for some oil exec's million dollar retirement plan...is it not?

As soon as alternate sources of fuel, tar sands, oil shale, grain, deeper off shore drilling, become economically viable, the price of a barrel of oil goes down, it did in the 70s and the 80s and now again. OPEC members as a whole are not fools. If the price stays to high they lose their market share.

As for the government, as soon as the price drops the programs to develop alternate sources and types dry up. The bad news is that one day the current sources will dry up and the alternatives will be 10 years down the road. Anything under $35-40 a barrel makes it difficult to develop new things. Natural gas is the same way. Why build a billion dollar nuc plant (and put up with the hassels of green groups) when you can build a couple a million dollar plant that burns natural gas, if the price of natural gas stays low to moderate.

IMHO

But Bush already went on TV and said he wasn't powerful enough to control oil prices. He said there was nothing he could do about it. What a turd.

Well, he could try not pissing off the entire middle east with a useless war, that would at least be a start
