Your car is watching you...

Big brother is moving into your car. Goodbye privacy.

Police state meshing with the corporate sector. Shocking. In this day and age?

These 'black boxes' will transmit to police if you are speeding swerving or whatever and will give them your location. They want to make it so that one would have to register a credit/debit card in order to get a licence or renewal. You credit card will be automatically deducted for any speeding ticket your car registers- you don't even have to be pulled over. If you start up your car and start to drive without putting on your seatbelt, you'll see a fine on your credit card statement or they'll send a ticket in the mail.

Lots of sh!ty senerios with these boxes.

You're kidding, right? If not, you're giving these "black boxes" much more credit than they deserve. True, they can store whether a seat belt is used or not and a major braking event. But you understand that they don't have a transmitter capability.

The part that I find intrusive is that the insurance companies have yet another tool to use to stick it to consumers.

actually obd3 specs originally had transmitter capability in them for emissions issues, but that got pulled. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see transmitter capability in gen4. wireless communication w/ dealership scanners is a short hop to wireless comms w/ police cruisers or reception points on overpasses.

I recall Chevy was the first to use these. They were to help them in real collision data recovery. In other words they could spend less money on crashing their brand new cars under controlled conditions and simply use yours in a real world crash. Strangely, even though you bought the car, Chevy still owned the black box and could collect it when insurance companies totalled out a car. I would not mind these if you could remove them but I know that Chevy made them integral to the computer system of the vehicle, take it out and the car won't run. Ford and others are probably going down the same road but luckily I bought my truck before Ford started using them.

The Pandora's box is already opened. Police and insurance companies subpoena these things to get the info to help build a case against you and to deny claims because of your own poor driving, respectively.

I'm buying used cars from now on that do not hav these things. I have a perfect driving record but the fact that my own vehicle could become evidence against me is disturbing.
