Iraqis Mulling US Withdrawal Timetable, Insurgent Amnesty

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article...239088,00.html

The timeline will be UN approved. Amnesty will be extended to those who have killed foreign troops but not Iraqis-"For those that defended their country against foreign troops, we need to open a new page . . . They did not mean to destabilise Iraq. They were defending Iraqi soil,” said Adnan Ali, a senior member of the Dawa party of Nouri alMaliki, the Prime Minister.

It also will require the US to cease combat operations against insurgents.

This could be spectacularly good news.

Ceasefires with this type of group are historically and notoriously unlikely to work well. So I won't hold my breath on this, but we can all pray for this plan to work!

The only thing that I don't see addressed here is how Iraq is expected to defend itself from its neighbors with no heavy military equipment to speak of.

So I guess untill we withdraw, we'll just be targets?

I think the idea would be that once they agree to stop blowing things up, we'd immediately stop our appropriately aggressive offense against their strongholds.
