Gun ownership and Party affiliation
I have a BA in Political Science, so my curiosity towards these things in inherent I suppose, but I have always wanted to see some research inquiry into how, if at all, the demographic characterisitic of firearms ownership effects party trends. It is often argued that such research would be difficult, if not impossible, because firearms ownership is often a coinciding trait with other socio-economic traits. I do not believe that is so. I believe this contention arises from the fact that academics in the field of Political Science are overwhelmingly Liberal Democrats, do not own firearms, and subscribe to the theory that only backwater rednecks and Christian Identity members do.
There definitely seems to be some sort of correlation; I see more people right of center than left of it here on the forum, however, there are some Democrats here. How these individuals reconcile themselves to party lines that conflict with their hobbies is a sort of mystery to me, but perhaps geography is a good explanation. I am from East Texas, for instance, where a great many people vote Democrat based upon their family patterns of voting behavior as Grandfather and Father both vote Democrat. In the case of East Texas, I think the explanation is that they still think they are voting for FDR and the New Deal, but further research would be needed. Has anyone here changed political views after becoming gun owners/shooters? I am conisdering doing some research into that statistic, and think this might be a good place to sortof feel out the waters.

I believe the time of voting through or in value of a "party line" has change for me and my close friends. I still believe some folk's will vote for the party and NOt the candidate, but for a large group (IHMO) those times are changing.

I am an independent but have leaned a bit to the conservative side since I've been a gun owner (although I am still pretty liberal on a couple of issues).

I've always voted straight party ticket Republican. As the lesser of two evils. Bush the 1st shook me with the AW ban but GW has been good to gun owners and I'd vote for him again if I could. I'll continue to vote this way untill a decent Libertarian runs. Why is it that they can only put foreward crackpots? I havent met a Dem that I'd vote for yet.
