DYING TO GET IN - Efforts to secure the Mexican border have done nothing to stem the flow of illegal immigrants but have had the effect of driving more into the desert where hundreds of them died last year. Ed Bradley reports. David Gelber is the producer.

Gee, I wonder what the point of this show will be?

That Mexican citizens choose to die in the desert rather than live in squaller. Tough luck for them... Not my problem.

Ray that is so rude. Least we can do is put up a fence so they can't get to the desert.

Ever wonder WHY 60 Minutes and these types of programs NEVER criticize the places that these people come from? Nowhere is it mentioned the corrpution, horrible living conditions or human rights violations in Mexico, Honduras, Venezuela or Chile. Never is Vincente Fox or Hugo Chavez called on the carpet for attrocities or conditions that are horrible and force these people to risk their lives, crossing the harsh desert.

Why is that so?

Where are the human rights watch people? Where are the Greenpeace people to see the horrible eivironmental practices in Mexico and South America? Where is the outrage on these programs from other human rights and relief agencies, denouncing the conditions in these places?

All you hear is pitiful tales of woe and how we are heartless bastards, if we do not take in everybody and pay their way and ignore the fact that they break our laws. I have no doubt its dangerous, but its not like US citizens are holding guns to these foreign nationals and forcing them to make the journey...is there?

Besides the obvious fact of the freebies and goodies and opportunities that await the illegals in the USA, how about looking at WHY they're leaving the place they were born in and once lived? We have to address ALL sides of this issue or building a damn fence will mean nothing...will it?

BB, I used to wonder; but it was a long time ago. I do not anymore. They have their agenda and the questions you asked are not on their agenda. Good post.

attackrott, good point. What they do on their southern border to illegals from Central and South American makes our efforts look like nothing (which, of course, is pretty much nothing).
