Bush at West Point

Quote:
By DEB RIECHMANN
The Associated Press
Saturday, May 27, 2006; 11:22 PM

WEST POINT, N.Y. -- President Bush, likening the war against Islamic radicals to the Cold War threat of communism, told U.S. Military Academy graduates on Saturday that America's safety depends on an aggressive push for democracy, especially in the Middle East.
Agressive, unwavering push for democracy.. I can live with that..

Quote:
"This is only the beginning," Bush said. "The message has spread from Damascus to Tehran that the future belongs to freedom, and we will not rest until the promise of liberty reaches every people in every nation."
Ok.. I am onboard with that...

Quote:
"The war began on my watch, but it's going to end on your watch," Bush told the cadets. "By standing with democratic reforms across a troubled region, we will extend freedom to millions who have not known it and lay the foundation for peace for generations to come."

Bush compared his moment in presidential history to that of President Truman's.

"As President Truman put it towards the end of his presidency, 'When history says that my term of office saw the beginning of the Cold War, it will also say that in those eight years we set the course that can win it.' His leadership paved the way for subsequent presidents from both political parties _ men like Eisenhower, Kennedy and Reagan _ to confront and eventually defeat the Soviet threat," Bush said.
Yep.. thank goodness Carter didn't screw the whole thing up by selling out to the communists!! That guy is an utter peice of ****.. I think it is telling that Bush didn't mention that peanut selling piece of crap in his list of warriors of the Cold War.

Quote:
"Today, at the start of a new century, we are again engaged in a war unlike any our nation has fought before, and like Americans in Truman's day, we are laying the foundations for victory."

Truman told the class of 1952 at West Point that the quest for global peace depended on the active and vigorous work to bring about freedom and justice across the world.

"That same principle continues to guide us in today's war on terror," Bush told the class of 2006, the first to enter the academy after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
That is exactly right. These young men and women entered into West Point at a time when we had been attacked.. If they don't understand the importance of their work.. their lifes ambitions, then all is truly lost.. I personally think that they know exactly what they are doing!! I am willing to bet my life on it!

Quote:
"If our enemies succeed in acquiring such weapons, they will not hesitate to use them, which means they would pose a threat to America as great as the Soviet Union," he said. "Against such an enemy, there is only one effective response: We will never back down, we will never give in, and we will never accept anything less than complete victory."
Never back down, never give in, and never accept anything less than complete victory... and some of you wonder why I like this man so much?

My problems with Bush aren't related to the war on terror, it's his stance on things like border control/illegal aliens, no child left behind, expanding medicare, not reigning in out of control congressional spending, and not taking a firm pro-gun position. Yes Bush did sign laws protecting gun makers into law, but he has not really tried to advance any other pro firearm agendas in the time he has been Pres. He's far better (I think) than Kerry or Gore, but I'm getting tired of voting for the lesser evil. I would like to see a true conservitive run for president not one of these "neo-cons".

We all know Bush has a lot of nerve....

....but to dare compare himself to Truman is ridiculous.

He didn't use this quote:

"Once a government is committed to the principle of silencing the voice of opposition, it has only one way to go, and that is down the path of increasingly repressive measures, until it becomes a source of terror to all its citizens and creates a country where everyone lives in fear."

or this one...

“I never did give them hell. I just told the truth, and they thought it was hell.”

(Harry S Truman, 33rd president of US, 1884 - 1972)

He made about 17 references to Truman in that speech.

His desperation for a legacy is comical.

His legacy will be what it is.. I am looking forward to comparing the Bush legacy compared to your man Bill Clinton.. I noticed in that speech that Carter was not the only former President who was not mentioned in the fight against communism.. Bill Clinton was not mentioned either.. Do you know why? Because he sucked!! He was just another rotten liberal..

Can't they leave the politicing out of a commencement address?? Try to motivate them, engourage them, they are the future. Sell your politics somewhere else.

Politics is more than appropriate for a West Point Commencement address.

'Politics' is what runs our country, it's what makes us strong.

And a politician is the Commander-In-Chief of the U.S. Military.

There is no better way.
