Arlington..

Quote:
TRACE ADKINS LYRICS

"Arlington"

I never thought that this is where I'd settle down,
I thought I'd die an old man back in my hometown,
They gave me this plot of land, me and some other men, for a job well done,
There's a big white house sits on a hill just up the road,
The man inside he cried the day they brought me home,
They folded up a flag and told my mom and dad, we're proud of your son

[Chorus:]
And I'm proud to be on this peaceful piece of property,
I'm on sacred ground and I'm in the best of company,
I'm thankful for those thankful for things I've done,
I can rest in peace, I'm one of the chosen ones, I made it to Arlington

I remember daddy brought me here when I was eight,
We searched all day to find out where my granddad lay,
And when we finally found that cross,
He said, "son this is what it cost to keep us free" Now here I am,
A thousand stones away from him,
He recognized me on the first day I came in,
And it gave me a chill when he clicked his heels, and saluted me.

[Repeat Chorus]

And everytime I hear twenty-one guns,
I know they brought another hero home to us

We're thankful for those thankful for the things we've done,
We can rest in peace, 'cause we are the chosen ones,
We made it to arlington, yea dust to dust,
Don't cry for us, we made it to arlington

Hat tip to Michelle Malkin for the picture and the link to the lyrics..

Happy Memorial day everybody

Raymond

(Edited to make the pic permanent...)

Big & Rich

"8th Of November"

Said goodbye to his momma as he left South Dakota
To fight for the red, white and blue
He was 19 and green with a new M-16
Just doing what he had to do
He was dropped in the jungle where the choppers would rumble
With the smell of napalm in the air
And the sergeant said...look up ahead
Like a dark evil cloud, 1,200 came down on him and 29 more
They fought for their lives but most of them died in the 173rd Airborne

[Chorus:]

On the 8th of November the angels were crying
As they carried his brothers away
With the fire raining down and the hell all around
There were few men left standing that day
Saw the eagle fly through a clear blue sky
1965, the 8th of November

Now he's 58 and his pony tail's gray
But the battle still plays in his head
He limps when he walks but he's strong when he talks
About the Shrapnel they left in his leg
He puts on a gray suit over his Airborne tattoo
And he ties it on one time a year
And remembers that fallen as he orders a tall one
And swallows it down with tears

[Chorus]

Saw the eagle fly through a clear blue sky
1965...
On the 8th of November the angels were crying
As they carried his brother away
With the fire raining down and the hell all around
There were few men left standing that day

[Chorus]

Said goodbye to his momma as he left South Dakota
to fight for the red, white and blue
He was nineteen and green with a new M-16
Just doing what he had to do
This song was written about the real life expereince of one Msgt. Niles
Harris (Ret.), U.S. Army when serving in the 173rd. Airborne in
Vietnam on the 8th of Nov. 1965.
To all those who serve and have served....Thank you.
To all those who gave the ultimate sacrafice......You will never be
forgotten.

Glory awaits on the battlefield
for the gallant that answered the call
Glory awaits with her arms outstreched
for those that had given all
Glory awaits for those that never bowed
despite the odds againstoverwhelming powers
Glory awaits for those that stood fast
down through our darkest hours

Glory awaits for those laid to rest
the heroes that never made it back home
Glory awaits in the fields of white crosses
where their names are etched in stone
Glory awaits amongst
the blood-soaked soilswhere many brave men still lie
Glory awaits in the final moments
when you are about to die!

Never knew about this hero. Made me proud to be from South Dakota.

That cemetery is an amazing place. Like the black granite of the Vietnam Memorial...you will walk away from it a changed person, the first time you visit the place.

I want to take my daughter there when she's a little older and can appreciate it. My mission is to raise her to appreciate our country and those that served in the military, not be so unappreciative as many other youngsters are these days. Alot of my Dad's friends are on that black wall...she needs to know about their sacrifices and have an appreciation for thier actions.

That is something my wife and I have been talking about as well.

Never been to D.C. And didn't get a chance to go to any in France when I was there (only for 2 days on a tour) but I really hope to some day.
