Another Gun-Grabbing Democrat Reaches Out

Representative Jim Moran
Congress United States Eighth District of Virginia

May 15, 2006 202-225-4376

Virginians Against Handgun Violence, Moran Hold Press Conference Calling for New Measures to Keep Guns out of the Wrong Hands

Washington, D.C., May 15th – Congressman Jim Moran, Virginia Democrat, joined with Jim Sollo, Executive Director of Virginians Against Handgun Violence and other gun safety advocates Monday at Market Square, Old Town Alexandria, calling on Congress to pass new measures that would keep guns out of the wrong hands. Their proposals include efforts to halt the illegal gun trade and passage of regulations on the 50 caliber sniper rifle.

“What the tragic shooting of Detective Armel in Fairfax County tells us is that when guns end up in the wrong hands terrible things happen,” said Moran. “Weapons such as the AK-47 and 50 caliber sniper rifle have no business being available for commercial sale.

Congress is negligent for not reauthorizing the Assault Weapons Ban. Other gun safety measures like closing the gun show loophole would keep these deadly weapons out of the hands of criminals, terrorists and the mentally unstable.”

Jim Sollo, Executive Director of Virginians Against Handgun Violence stated, "The recent shooting of the police officers in Fairfax County tragically illustrates the ease with which unstable and dangerous people gain access to guns. That is why Virginians Against Handgun Violence is committed to disrupting the flow of guns from their point of manufacture into the hands of killers. We are also committed to getting specific weapons of war off the streets. That is why we commend Congressman Jim Moran for introducing H.R. 654, a bill which would prohibit the sale of .50 caliber sniper rifles."

Congressman Moran has introduced legislation, the “50 Caliber Sniper Rifle Reduction Act” (H.R. 654) that would prohibit the sale or transfer of 50 caliber sniper rifles and require that 50 caliber sniper rifles currently in private collections be registered under the National Firearms Act.
Exemptions are made for the U.S. military and law enforcement organizations in the bill. The bill currently has 28 cosponsors.

The 50 caliber sniper rifle is capable of inflicting a devastatingly accurate impact from well over a mile away. The U.S. Army Handbook on Urban Combat states that the weapon is designed and intended for use to attack bulk fuel tanks and other high-value targets from great distances. A leading manufacturer of the 50 caliber touts its ability to bring down a modern jet aircraft with ammunition that can be purchased for less than 10 U.S. dollars. Time Magazine recently ran a profile detailing how the 50 caliber could be used to attack nuclear power plants.

Attention Bush-Haters, Moran is the type of guy you help to elect.

I wonder what will happen to the Republican base if they nominate Giuliani for President or Vice-President? I think the Dems have been pretty stung and will not bring up gun control in elections. They will wait until after they get elected to start work on gun control measures.

To my original thought, what will happen to the Republican party when they start nominating people like Giuliani: anti-gun, pro-choice, pro-gay marriage? Will Giuliani make himself over to be more appealing to the base and in doing so appear as a hypocrite who only wants to get elected? Or will these future candidates, like Giuliani, stay the same and make the Republican party appear hypocritical, alienate their base and rather than put forward candidates who reflect the majority of their membership put forward candidates just to get elected? He's already whoring for Ralph Reed in his run for Lieutenant Governor in Georgia and has pretty much kept his mouth shut on his positions or side-stepped the questioning. Ralph Reed said of him, "An 80% friend does not equal a 20% enemy." However, he fails to realize that 80% or more of Republicans vote on just those 20% of issue stances.

The Dems are doing it already and stay silent on gun control or have several people who are pro-gun running in contested races.

I think you are confusing (as usual) true republican conservatism with Bush and his cronies.

I find it ironic that states like CA have banned .50 cal despite the facts that:

1) Nobody can seem to find evidence of any crime being committed in CA (let alone the rest of the USA) with a .50

2) Since .50 cal is legal in some surrounding states like Nevada, a sniper with a Barrett could perch themselves on the border and shoot MILES into CA, taking out a target.

I like Barrett's new approach - they have a new round that's not a .50 but yet packs even more of a wallop.

Seems to me the crimes committed in Fairfax VA, were not done with a 50 cal. 'sniper rifle'....

I love the leaps of logic these people take.

Also of note, if the local PD had had AR15's in their cars, they could have dispensed with this criminal rather easily.

A great quote I found in response to the "not used in hunting" argument:

"...the Second Amendment is not for killing little ducks and leaving Huey and Dewey and Louie without an aunt and uncle. It is for hunting politicians, like [in] Grozny, [or back in] 1776, when they take your independence away!" -- California Rep. Bob Dornan, Congressional Record, 25 January, 1995

I am one of those cronies and I assure you that he is not confused.

Afterall, it is not The President who wishes to take your gun rights away.

Us cronies proudly stand behind him on that one.
