Crying is a normal function of the human body. When a foreign matter contacts the surface of the eye, tears are released in effort to flush away the solid or neutralize the liquid.

Emotional health can also governed be the tear ducts. Stress causes neurotoxins to build up in the body. Over time, these toxins can cause damage to the bodies immune system which can lead to many forms of physical illness. The chemical mixture released by the body through emotional tears is a neutralizing agent for flushing the neurotoxins out via the tear ducts. The more toxins that are flushed, the tears will have more of a saltier or bitter taste. Hence the term "bitter tears".

Everyone needs to cry occasionally. Whether it is for a fallen fellow soldier on the battlefield, a departed beloved relative or even tears shed from the burden of guilt from one's own wrongdoings. Crying is as normal and personal as pi$$ing or crapping.

Joe is screened prior to deploying, Joe is screened when he returns. He has ample access to help, and his immediate supervisor(squad leader, team leader, section chief, etc) keeps an eye on him. Immediate supervisor is constantly reminded to look out for signs of depression, combat fatigue, etc.
There is a consistent "tough guy" attitude in the ground forces of the military. People often live by the theory "suck it up and drive on". That's where the supervisor or buddy steps in and figures out why Joe is feeling down.

Suicides are up because Joe has access to weapons/ammo 24/7. If Joe has a sudden thought that he wants to kill himself, it's easy to do. If these idiots (such as the Alliance for Human Research Protection) want every Joe to become a head shrinker, they are sadly mistaken.

Oh, and the military does take care of our own. If Joe needs help, he gets it. We don't need some leftist nutjob organization like Alliance for Human Research Protection to stick its nose where it doesn't belong.

If these knuckleheads have their way you'll have to send Joe to the shrink every time a mortar round lands on the FOB or the chowhall is out of chicken cordon bleu.

Joe does need to be looked after, and some additional screening is probably important, but I can tell you it will do no good. If Joe wants to quit, he'll quit.

Look at the suicides for disaster workers. Way higher then what the rate is for soldiers, but they normally do it months or years after the disaster.

I think we'll see a similar increase in military suicides(depending on their individual experiences) in the future.
