The GAS WAR

Someone sent me a chain e-mail that got me thinking. (BTW I NEVER forward those things). The e-mail stated:

If everyone stopped buying gas from the largest producer (Exxon and Mobil) they would be forced to lower prices. This way, you can still buy gas, but Exxon / Mobil would be forced to lower their price. Conversely, their competitors would also be forced to lower their prices.

Could this work or is it an oversimplification? It makes sense on paper to me. Heck I can get $3 per gallon gas anywhere without going to Exxon or Mobil.

oversimplification, they know we need it and will end up buying it reguardless of the price. Also they'd complain to the gubbment and they'd give them a hand out at our expense.

rush was talking about this today. I don't listen to him normally but it was on that station and it was interesting. He was going over the percentage of increase in crude and delivery costs. The current price is correct for the price of crude. It would be nice if there was an evil empire to topple and get lower gas prices but it looks like its all a bunch of BS from people that want to get elected.

Bush has basically handed the next election to the Democrats.

its starting to look that way. I've already started to wonder if I should invest money in "evil" firearms.

With staunch supporters like funnygun, you may be right.

I like your thinking there but realistically it would never happen. How would you get everyone or even a majority to do it? I'm not convinced that all the oil company's are in bed with each other anyway. Too much back scratching and political favors. And don't just bash the republicans. The Dems are way into oil themselves. The entire political structure to fight the oil companys is corrupt.

That leaves it up to us.

For what it's worth, I won't buy from Exxon or Mobil.

Buy a Volvo, or any other kind of diesel and make your own fuel, bio diesel.
Saw it on TV and a guy in Richmond(?) let GW see his set up......average costs the guy said was about $.69 gal ang would be even less after the recoup from making the 'reactor" and haveing to replace the rubber fuel lines in his cars. He said he was averaging 31-46mpg and the exhaust smelled good too.......

What would this accomplish?

Let's suspend disbelief for a moment, and assume they would drop their prices.

As prices drop, people begin buying gas again. Gas companies raise prices again, possibly even higher than before, to compensate for their losses.

Do it again? Ok.

The deeper losses now push the gas prices much higher after the boycott.

Do it again? Ok.

The two largest petroleum suppliers declare bankruptcy. Both struggle to remain in business. Let's say one manages to regain its footing, but the other crumbles under the financial pressure.

Smaller companies step in to feed the demand. But without the resources of the larger companies, and the larger infrastructure, the inefficiency of their operations, unprepared to deal with a much larger demand, forces them to raise gas prices yet again to cover their investments in additional equipment.

Of course, this is entirely speculative. But it seems plausible to me, and at least shows one scenario where unintended consequences occur.
