jednp, I recall paying .26 per gallon when I was 16 in 1966. Gosh, I wish we could go back to that, even if it is only for a week!! Here I am, just turned 56 today (Happy B day to me ) and regular is now $3.09 and diesel $2.99 (I use both).

The cost of living has increased 514% since 1966. So a gallon of gasoline that cost 0.26 in 1966 would cost 5.14 x 0.26 = $1.28 in round numbers today if the only effect was inflation. But the cost is more than twice that today.

Plus there are about 100,000,000 more people now than in 1966.

When I was in High School in 1966, there were maybe three cars in the parking lot driven by students....

who is the "they" that control the prices of oil? Oil is a traded commodity just like gold. Supply and Demand. If you can show me that gas prices have not risen proportionally with oil prices I'll get pissed off with everyone else. Until then all the math I've been doing shows its right in line.

When I can look across the street and see a competing gas station, with prices 20 cents higher, and see gas prices go up just because the word Iran is mentioned on the news, and oil companies make record profits yet won't build new refineries to ease supply shortages.. that is the THEY we refer to. The problem in this country isn't really a shortage of oil, it's a shortage of gasoline because of not having the refinery capability to produce more.

If the oil companies build more refineries then they can import more $70/barrel crude oil - so what's the use?

The problem is that the Democrats will not let us drill for our own oil.
