Another One Bites The Dust.
Ex-DeLay Aide To Plead Guilty
WASHINGTON, March 31, 2006 (CBS/AP) (AP) Tony Rudy, a former top aide to Rep. Tom DeLay, has agreed to plead guilty to charges in the widening federal investigation of lobbyist fraud, a law enforcement official said Friday. A hearing was scheduled Friday in U.S. District Court in Washington, where Rudy was expected to enter his plea. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal has not yet been filed with the court. Rudy would be the first person to plead guilty to charges in the case since Jack Abramoff, once a leading GOP lobbyist, pleaded guilty to fraud charges in January. Rudy was referred to in court papers released in connection with Abramoff's plea. The documents referred to Rudy as Staffer A, and said that Abramoff, on behalf of clients who wanted to stop Internet gambling and postal rate legislation, paid $50,000 in 10 equal monthly payments beginning in June 2000 to Rudy's wife while Rudy was a top aide to DeLay. |

Wow, a Republican, damn.
Check out a typical Democrat administration's crook statistics. CRIME STATS - Number of individuals and businesses associated with the Clinton machine who have been convicted of or pleaded guilty to crimes: 47 - Number of these convictions during Clinton's presidency: 33 - Number of indictments/misdemeanor charges: 61 - Number of congressional witnesses who have pleaded the Fifth Amendment, fled the country to avoid testifying, or (in the case of foreign witnesses) refused to be interviewed: 122 http://prorev.com/legacy.htm The Democrat Culture of Corruption will NEVER be equaled.....except by another Democrat administration of course. The truth of the matter is that it took the Congressional Republicans only 10 years to attain a level of corruption that exceeds what the Democrats were able attain in 40 years.
The net is closing in on DeLay.... Former DeLay Aide Pleads Guilty in Lobbyist Fraud Probe By MARK SHERMAN The Associated Press WASHINGTON - A former top aide to Rep. Tom DeLay pleaded guilty Friday to conspiracy and promised to cooperate with a federal investigation of bribery and lobbying fraud that has so far netted three convictions and prompted calls for ethics reform in Congress. Tony Rudy, DeLay's former deputy chief of staff, admitted to conspiring with convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff both while Rudy worked for DeLay and after he left the lawmaker's staff to become a lobbyist himself. He faces up to five years in prison, but could receive much less based on the extent of his help with the investigation, U.S. District Judge Ellen Segal Huvelle told Rudy at a court hearing in Washington. As a top aide to DeLay in his role as House majority leader, Rudy took payments from Abramoff in 2000, then helped stop an Internet gambling bill opposed by Abramoff's clients, according to court papers. Later, while working as a lobbyist, Rudy also was extensively involved in arranging a golf trip to Scotland for Rep. Bob Ney, described as Representative 1, and congressional staffers, the court papers said. Rudy, who resigned as DeLay's deputy chief of staff in 2001, is the first person to plead guilty in the case since Abramoff pleaded guilty to fraud charges in January. Michael Scanlon, a former DeLay press secretary who later became a lobbying partner with Abramoff, pleaded guilty in November to conspiring to bribe public officials. The plea agreement contains no allegations that DeLay, who it describes as Representative 2, did anything wrong. As part of the deal, Rudy pleaded guilty to the single conspiracy count and prosecutors agreed not to pursue other possible charges against him or his wife. "The American public loses when officials and lobbyists conspire to buy and sell influence in such a corrupt and brazen manner. By his admission in open court today, Mr. Rudy paints a picture of Washington which the American public and law enforcement will simply not tolerate," said Alice Fisher, assistant Attorney General in charge of the Justice Department's Criminal Division. Rudy, 39, stood with his head slightly bowed and his hands clasped in front of him as the judge detailed how he took free trips, tickets, meals and golf games from Abramoff while working for DeLay. Rudy, a lawyer, answered the judge's questions in a strong voice but seemed more subdued when Huvelle asked if he understood that he was pleading guilty to a felony and would lose some rights. "Yes your honor," he said quietly. His lawyer, Laura Ariane Miller, objected when Huvelle described the allegation that he took things "in exchange" for official acts. Instead, Miller said that her client sought and received gifts. Huvelle said that under the sentencing guidelines, which are not mandatory but often used by judges, Rudy could receive 24 to 30 months in prison because he does not have a criminal record and acknowledged his crime. The judge said that prosecutors could ask for a lower sentence, depending on his cooperation. Rudy was allowed to remain free pending the sentencing Rudy and his lawyer left the courthouse without commenting to reporters. Ney's lawyer, Mark Tuohey, said a guilty plea by Rudy doesn't change Ney's situation. The congressman continues to maintain his innocence. Tuohey said he hadn't seen the court papers filed Friday and couldn't comment in detail on them. Court papers say Rudy sent an e-mail inviting Ney and his then-chief of staff Neil Volz to Scotland in 2002, promising golf and "drinking and smoking Cubans." Ney contends he thought the trip was properly paid for by a GOP policy group for a legitimate international parliamentary event. "Mr. Rudy had nothing to do with Mr. Ney's Scotland trip at all, nothing," Tuohey said. When asked whether Rudy could have sent the e-mail invite, he said, "If he did, I haven't seen it." Ney is cooperating with Justice Department requests for information. For example, Ney spokesman Brian Walsh said the Ohio Republican has provided prosecutors with stacks of receipts to prove he and his staff paid for their own food at Abramoff's downtown Washington restaurant. Ney also has said he was duped by Abramoff into entering statements on the Congressional Record in support of Abramoff's purchase of a fleet of Florida casino boats. After leaving DeLay's office, Rudy first joined Abramoff's lobbying team at the Greenberg Traurig law firm. Soon after, he signed on with another former DeLay staffer, Ed Buckham, at the Alexander Strategy Group. |

Mark the conservative haters on this board have claimed the net has been closing in for months.
Culture of wha....? Here is some information on the Caucus of corruption. "There are no Democrats who took money from Jack Abramoff, not one, not one single Democrat." Howard Dean Dean’s Abramoff Tie February 24th, 2006 Before Howard Dean huffed recently that “not one dime of Jack Abramoff’s money ever went to any Democrat,” he should have checked his own pockets. By only the most Clintonesque parsing of words can Dean’s statement be considered passably accurate. And in a very real sense, he need look no further than his own failed presidential campaign’s accounts to see how funds tainted from Abramoff’s tribal lobbying dealings ended up in Democrats’ hands. Even the Washington Post has admitted that Abramoff did not work in a vacuum on the controversial Indian tribal accounts. The Post went so far as to publish a chart of what it called the “A Team.” Among the recipients of campaign contributions from A Team members: Howard Dean. FEC contribution number 23991382452 lists a $1,000 donation to Dean by Greenberg Traurig lobbyist Ronald Platt, a member of the Post’s A Team, on June 30, 2003. At that time, lobbyist disclosure forms show Platt as working with Abramoff on two of the controversial tribal accounts: the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana , and the Chitimacha Tribe of Louisiana . The forms show that Platt worked on a third controversial tribal account, the Sandia Pueblo, with other A Team members but not Abramoff. Platt was far from alone as an A Team member who gave to Democrats. An in-depth review of campaign contributions made by Abramoff’s team of lobbyists shows that Democrats may actually have benefitted more than Republicans from their political donations. The first thing that is striking upon review of the A Team political donations is how each individual lobbyist donated exclusively to only one political party. The second thing that one notices is how similar the total amounts are. From January, 2001 through March, 2004 – the time period that reports place Abramoff at Greenberg Traurig – seven of the 22 lobbyists that the Post cites as comprising the A Team donated $265,203 exclusively to Democrats (excluding a small amount to Greenberg Traurig’s in-house political action committee), while nine team members – including Abramoff – contributed $255,315 to Republicans. Federal records show no political contributions from six of the team’s lobbyists. (A quick editorial comment: Most reports about Abramoff’s political donations include contributions made by his wife, Pamela. Her donations to Republicans during this period totaled $29,000. They are not included in totals used in this report because contributions from spouses or family members of other A Team lobbyists could not be verified with certainty. They also are likely to be substantial as some are also in political and/or lobbying positions.) The numbers are so close, that one can’t help but speculate that it could well be the result of forethought, a concerted effort to spread influence in both parties. Among the Democratic recipients of A Team donations: the aforementioned Dr. Dean, Democrat Senators Clinton, Kerry, Daschle, Boxer, Baucus, Bayh, Breaux, Cantwell, Carnahan, Cleland, Conrad, Dodd, Dorgan, Feingold, Harkin, Hollings, Johnson (Tim), Landrieu, Leahy, Lieberman, Lincoln, Mikulski, Murray, Nelson, Pryor, Reed, Rockefeller, and Torricelli – who left the Senate in disgrace under the cloud of his own campaign finance scandal – as well as the Democratic Senate Majority Fund, a plethora of Democratic congressmen, and PAC’s that distributed funds across the Democratic Party landscape. Additionally, one of the A Team members, Michael D. Smith, had his own political action committee. Smith, a former official in Al Gore’s 2000 presidential campaign, distributed $168,000 to Democratic candidates through his Winning Margins PAC from 2001-2004, the closest reporting period to the time Abramoff was at Greenberg Traurig, according to federal records. Disregarding the PAC money, Smith’s personal donations to Democrats almost offset Abramoff’s contributions to Republicans. F.E.C. records show that Smith donated $117,417 to Democrats or to his–or the firm’s–PAC from January, 2001 through March, 2004. Abramoff gave $127,080 to Republicans during the same period. Don’t expect to hear much about this in the traditional media. For one thing, most journalists loathe lobsters. No, not the succulent crustaceans served with melted butter. “Lobsters” is the pejorative term many reporters use for lobbyists. (It is somewhat ironic that in an industry that–as a whole–decries anyone else’s use of such epithets, the use of them is fairly common. Public relations professionals are flacks. Lobbyists are lobsters.) To the media elite, “lobsters” represent the antithesis of all they consider good. Journalists want openness–sunshine–in government. Lobbyists work behind the scenes out of the public view. Journalists like to believe they look out for the interests of the average guy. Lobbyists, they see as working only for moneyed special interests. There is only one other group of people that draws the media’s venom as much as lobsters do. Journalists have a derogatory name for these people, too. They call them … Republicans. William Tate is a writer and researcher and former broadcast journalist. He enjoys a lobster dinner every now and then in Santa Fe, New Mexico. __________________________________________________ ______________________ Records Detail Senator's Links to Abramoff's Clients From Associated Press February 15, 2006 WASHINGTON — Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) wrote at least four letters helpful to Indian tribes represented by Jack Abramoff, and the senator's staff regularly had contact with the disgraced lobbyist's partners about legislation affecting other clients. The activities — detailed in billing records and correspondence obtained by Associated Press — are more extensive than previously disclosed. They occurred over three years as Reid collected about $68,000 in donations from Abramoff's firm, lobbying partners and clients. Reid's office acknowledged last week having "routine contacts" with Abramoff's lobbying partners and intervening on some government matters, such as blocking some tribal casinos, in ways Abramoff's clients might have deemed helpful. But it said none of Reid's actions were affected by donations or carried out for Abramoff. "All the actions that Sen. Reid took were consistent with his long-held beliefs, such as not letting tribal casinos expand beyond reservations, and were taken to defend the interests of Nevada constituents," Reid spokesman Jim Manley said. Reid has led the Democratic Party's attacks portraying Abramoff's lobbying and fundraising as a Republican scandal. Abramoff's records show his lobbying partners billed for about two dozen phone contacts or meetings with Reid's office in 2001 alone. Most were to discuss Democratic legislation that would have applied the U.S. minimum wage to the Northern Mariana Islands, a U.S. territory and an Abramoff client, but would have given the islands a temporary break on the wage rate, the billing records show. Reid also intervened on government matters at least five times in ways helpful to Abramoff's tribal clients, once opposing legislation on the Senate floor and four times sending letters pressing the Bush administration on tribal issues. Reid collected donations about the time of each action. Ethics rules require senators to avoid even the appearance of a conflict of interest in collecting contributions when they take official acts benefiting donors. Abramoff's firm also hired one of Reid's top legislative aides as a lobbyist. The aide later helped throw a fundraiser for Reid at Abramoff's firm that raised donations from several of his lobbying partners. Reid's longtime chief of staff accepted a free trip to Malaysia arranged by a consulting firm connected to Abramoff that recently gained attention in the influence-peddling investigation. Abramoff has pleaded guilty in a fraud and bribery case and is helping prosecutors investigate the conduct of lawmakers, congressional aides and administration officials his firm lobbied. Abramoff spokesman Andrew Blum declined to comment on the Reid contacts. Reid has criticized Republicans' ties to Abramoff while refusing to return any of his own donations. He argues there is no need to return the money. "Sen. Reid never met Jack Abramoff and never has taken contributions from him, and efforts to drag him into this are going to fail," Manley said. "Abramoff is a convicted felon, and no one has suggested the other partners we might have dealt with have done anything impermissible." __________________________________________________ ______________________ These Democrats are among the many with ties to Abramoff. You have said the net is closing since this thing began. Do you remember the last election? We were reminded by the media and by commercials 24/7 of all the things Bush had done wrong. Then Bush won. Do you think that indictments, or even convictions of Republicans (when there have and will be plenty of Democrats going down over monetary issues) will hide the fact that the Democratic party has no agenda other than to tell us what is wrong with America? Do you really think that promising free internet for all will win you a majority? It wont. People know that wether more Republicans are found guilty or more Democrats, that the other party is just as bad. People will vote based on the agenda of the party, and the party who can back up their agenda with a history of pushing that agenda. The Democrats agenda? Bush is wrong. The result? Another lost election year.
