RALEIGH, N.C. - -- Asheville City Councilman Cecil Bothwell believes in ending the death penalty, conserving water and reforming government -- but he doesn't believe in God. His opponents say that's a sin that makes him unworthy of serving in office, and they have the North Carolina Constitution on their side.
Interesting. It's a 'sin' so he can't serve? This will never survive any sort of challenge. Nor should it. Any thoughts?

The title of that article is an affront to grammar.

Interesting to note that in Maryland, you can't be a witness or a juror if you don't believe in God. I mean, allegedly. There's still that pesky US Constitution out there...

He's free to believe, or not believe, as the case may be. Unless the state Constitution has some declaratory requirement, I don't see how any kind of challenge could be mounted. Mountain out of a molehill.

^^^Well, the mountain is being constructed by the conservatives 'outraged' that he took the oath of office w/out invoking God. I don't really care either way.

The North Carolina Constitution says this:
"Disqualifications of office. The following persons shall be disqualified for office: First, any person who shall deny the being of Almighty God..."
So technically the challengers are right.

Not if the 'law' is unconstitutional. It's not been challenged in court yet. Sounds like they are making lots of noise, but not going to take him to court.

Yeah, that's BS. He should be able to serve. If their constitution has those words, then I suppose he isn't allowd - but it's still wrong in my opinion.

If their constitution has those words, you can guarantee it will find its way in the federal supreme court and then these Christian conservatives will find themselves in a situation they don't want to be in. Namely, the SC will have no option but to strike it down, and there's no telling how broad of an interpretation the SC will take on it.
If they have any brains, they'll let this one go. Just like if anti-gunners had any brains, they'd have let Heller v. DC go and California would have let Nordyke go. Instead, they decided to press on and now we have an individual rights interpretation and the 9th circuit has incorporation.
they have WAY more to lose on this one than they ever stand to gain.
