I can only assume this raises the bar in the family, and being a minimum wage hood rat, 16 year old drop out, teen mother, teen felon etc is not on the horizon for your kids.

Every year we have millions of immigrants come from nothing to the middle class. A not to shabby % of them rocket to upper middle class shortly there after.

with 30 million blacks here, i dont see how its possible for low caste level indians, an bengali, a chinese of ethnic minority, romania gypsys who are persecuted in europe etc can come here, with no "roma community", no bengali community. They come here, save like a mad man for 3 years, buy a store, work 18 hour days for 3-5 years, then start bringing over family every year. I literally know over a dozen shop keepers who did this. One guy owns 13 very successfrul delis/liquor stores/party stores. He makes about 750k - 1 million bucks per year. He has about a 5th grade education, but he will work a robot under the table. You cant outwork this fella. Its impossible. He never believed for one second he could fail.

I have known guys less successful than he first. Another is two chinese brothers, came here no money, no english. Got a job at supermarket. The literally lived in the back of the supermarket in a walk in closet for 2 years. They own that supermarket and another one, in ten years.

These folks didnt know our customs, they didnt speak english. They have poor educations often. They have no advantages and almost every disadvantage.

The saying is true, you cannot keep a good man down. He always finds a way.

Affirmative action doesnt take into account wealthy blacks. Wealthy black families go back to the time of slavery, as freed blacks did infact own black slaves, and indian slaves, and indians owned slaves too. In west michigan there was an old black only lake resort. Going back over 100 years.

The sick thing is the son of a male federal judge, and female heart surgeon .... third generation money, all private schools going back to the 1920s gets affirmative action, whilst Roma gypsies get nothing. Hillbillies get nothing.

Nothing is ever simple. Just as what you propose isn't. It's a platitude. I know, you have a PhD. From your screen name I can tell you are proud of that. You should be. They're damned hard to get. I worked my ass off for mine. I too, worked fulltime going to college and fulll time (and more) all the way through grad school. Good for you, good for me.

The problem is many of those guys and gals you grew up with who are now lost in the bottom of the economic barrel represent a lost resource. It's human capital - wasted. I've spent the last 25 years doing what I can to reverse that. Huge numbers of the kids I've worked with over the years have tremendous potential that for a whole host of reasons - some self fulfilling, others purely cirmcumstantial - are not being realized.

Maybe we don't owe it to them to do everything possible to convince them of what they can do and to help/cajole/harass/push them to comprehend their potential and make the most of it, maybe we do. However, I'm convinced we owe it to ourselves. As a people, a nation, we need to most from every resident - citizen or not - or we sink in the "formerly a great nation" status.
