Einheit, I am always very impressed with your posts. I even agree with the majority of them. (Not all, that would be anathema to me).

You have made many of the most thoughtful and intelligent and well informed contributions to this board IMO. But this one time you appear to be in error. Unless I am just misunderstanding your wording, which is certainly possible...if that's the case, then I'll let the following stand as an explanation to those who don't understand the relationship of a board of directors to a corporation. (And their CEOs).

Board members don't "help" CEOs. At least not in the sense I inferred your meaning to be from what you wrote. Board members oversee things as advocates of the shareholders. It is a legal requirement for any publicly owned corporation (in America) to have a board of directors.

The members of the corporate boards are elected by the shareholders. The directors are not management nor are they even employees (a misconception held by many). They do receive compensation generally, but not necessarily... which is often in the form of stock, the amount of which is also voted to them by the shareholders. The shareholders can vote to pay them in cash if they see a reason to. Stock and/or stock options are almost always a good incentive not only for board members, but for management and labor (meaning employees in this sense of the word "labor") as well, since keeping the value of a company's common stock (equity shares) is always a good incentive to work hard and smart.

So even though board members aren't employees in the normal sense of the word, they still perform functions (work) that can and should benefit the bottom line. And that bodes well for the owners of any company (who are the common stock shareholders in the case of public corporations).

It can be confusing since a board member can own stock, which makes him or her an owner of the company, and they can get paid to perform their duties as board members, yet technically they are not employed. I guess a simple way of looking at it would be they are non-working owners (partners) who don't earn any salary, but get paid as consultants to the very companies they own (in part).

I guess it's supposed to be confusing. After all, the accountants and auditors and IRS have to have something to keep them all busy. And of course the lawyers make themselves necessary to keep it all sorted out. Shakespeare was right. The only logical place to start is by killing all the lawyers.

EDIT: Damn, mgeoffriau said the same while I was typing. Oh well, at least he's wrong about everything else. j/k

And I bet someone else out there somewhere has written an article with their own numbers in it that disprove his numbers. So what do you do? Believe whichever story you want I guess.

Definitely NO insult intended. Sorry if it seemed that way.

Lack of knowledge is something we ALL share. Just about different things. No one can know it all. That's why I get frustrated when I read XD40Fun's posts. I may disagree with his politics, but I wouldn't criticise HIM for his beliefs...It's enough to debate beliefs and opinions. So under normal circumstances it shouldn't ever be OK to criticise the person...certainly not on an anonymous message board.

But with enough repetition and essentially no use of thought, it gets to a point where criticism of the source is the only possible response. And responses are what he's so obviously seeking. Can't argue with facts when there aren't any.

The relentless putting forth opinions as if they are facts is bad enough, but constantly spewing misinformation gets to be unbearable. Is it all he's capable of? I sincerely doubt that. Certainly he seems intelligent and interested, so why no desire to be informed?

I have to believe it's just laziness so I waste my time trying to provoke reason. Looks like it isn't in the cards, but hope springs eternal.

That's the definition of a "safe bet". Followed with sound logic.

Ok, find me the article with the numbers that disprove what Walter Williams is writing. Come on...you're so sure its wrong, because it does not fit in with your entrenched beliefs...lets see the proof.

You see...this "poor getting poorer" crap and other useless class warfare drivel has been tossed around for so damned long by everyone, it is taken as truth, with little or no proof. Much as John Stossel's ABC program was put together to bust popular myths with truth, statistics and reason...so was Dr. Williams article.

Some things may SOUND good and we MAY want to believe them, but when light is shed on it and the numbers are looked at in detail...many of the widely held beliefs simply don't hold water.

Naaa... I'm not that interested in the story. It just seems like for every story you read there's another one out there that will tell you just the opposite. They say there's two sides to every story you know.

Yep.

I consider that article to be the other side of the "Poor getting poorer" drivel that gets drudged up around here on a regular basis.

Its time we start confronting what is parrotted by everyone or taking it as the gospel truth and see what is true and what is simply emotionally driven nonsense.

Hey Delija, what do you think of einheit13's signature phrase, "Raise your fist and be proud"?

I wonder what it means and where it originated:

Now that you two are good buddies does einheit13's provocative "Raise your fist and be proud" jive with "Peace"? I wonder.

You're right I don't. Unless you are proud of something located under your arm when your raise your fist...or you are saluting someone or.....whatever. It just sounds so interesting.
