+1 on that. A company I worked for had Amex as the corporate card. It was not accepted in many place in the U.S and when it came to foreign travel - forget about it.

I have yet to find anyplace that take plastic that won't take at least a Mastercard or a Visa.

He'll take cashier's checks and MO's. If the item goes out of stock often, call him or shoot him an email and I'm sure he'll hold it until he recieves your check/MO.

A lot of places do not take discover either. I think that discover and amex. charge the company more so that you can get your flyer miles or money back at the end of the month like some of them advertise.

I'm guessing the only reason Mastercard hasn't used it in a commercial is the risk of a lawsuit. I could see it going like this:

4 steak dinners-$150.00
2 bottle of wine-$50.00
dessert-$40.00
taxes and tip-$60.00
total for taking the Boss out to get that big promotion-$300.00

Watching someone try to use an American Express card to pay for it-PRICELESS!

I agree, it stinks about people not taking AMEX but their fees are too outrageous especially when you consider that on a regular account (or at least it used to be) that they were not carrying the balance like MC and VISA do, they wanted it paid in full by the due date (basically a 30 day loan).

Most ATM cards these days can also be used as a Credit/Debit card (it will have a Visa, etc. emblem on it).

There is no reason for an average joe/jane to have an AMEX. There used to be some prestige in the card because it was a true CHARGE card and you had to have decent credit/income to get it. They are still using that "prestige" to get your average consumer to sign up, even though they would be better off with a Mastercard or Visa.

Sorry D_Fence. There is a huge benfit to using AMEX. The guarantee every purchase make online using an AMEX card. You don't get your package, you get into a dispute, etc; they remove it from your bill and handle it. I have had to use this feature about a half dozen times and they handled the situation and I never heard another word. They are excellent to use with online purchases. I could give a rats butt about "prestige". What is that? You have prestige about a little piece of plastic? If that's what makes you feel good then you got big problems pal.

I also hate when companies don't allow American Express.

All credit cards offer consumer buying protection. Some even insure the purchase should it be lost or stolen.

All cards have that protection.

Chill out. I didn't say you or I cared about the prestige of a card. The fact is that AMEX thinks a lot of people do, and I think they are right.
