I guess the answer should be obvious but I still have to ask: how did this happen?
We all know the 4 rules. This accident would seem to have violated them all (as they all really do). Did something more "unusual" go "wrong" or did this guy really put his hand in front of the gun and pull the trigger? In any event, I hope he does OK. Sounds very serious but can always hope for the best.

OMG!!! That will make me check 5 times before I clean my XD45 or anything for that matter. That is soooo nasty looking. I've heard all the warnings before,and do them but a picture is worth a thousand words...and then some.

That hole is NOT just from the bullet but from the expanding gas
I would bet if his hand was further away from the barrel instead of dang near sitting on it the hole would have been much smaller http://negligentdischarge.com/leg.html this guy zinged a 45 round thru his leg 2x (two entry and two exit) but didn't have the barrel pressed up against his leg..otherwise it would have been much much much worse
