My Varminter
It's a Ruger M77 chambered in 25-06 with, as you can see, a heavy barrell. The stock was hand checkered by a friend of the previous owner. She's a beauty and shoots almost as good as she looks. Needs a free float job, though.

That's a beauty. My next purchase is a bolt action in 30.06; possibly Ruger...

So, I've been looking at some other rifles and have to ask your opinions.
Does the barrell on this rifle look heavier than normal? Would this classify as a "bull" barrell?
I really need to get out and do some long range work with it.

That is one sweet looking rifle. Not sure if this would be the right place to post this, but I know next to nothing about long range rifles. What make/model/caliber would one suggest I look at to get into long range shooting? I'd love to pick something and practice. I know pistols and shotguns and that's about it.

IMO, and you'll probably hear this from most guys, if you're looking at really long range weaponry for deer, elk, bear, etc. you should look into something along the lines of .30 caliber.
The most popular caliber I've heard of for all around performance is the .308 which is readily available in several configurations from Savage, Tikka, Remington, Winchester... you can find this from many manufacturers. Another very popular option (ammo is widely available) is 30-06. This can be had from virtually every long gun maker.
If you're looking for more of a small game/varmint rifle, see above. This particular rifle, the M77, is chambered in 25-06 so you get a smaller caliber round moving extra fast. It's great for coyote and deer, which is all I'll be hunting any time soon. Other good varmint rounds that I've heard are popular are the .220 Swift, 22-250, .223, .243 and some others. The M77 can be found in many other calibers, too.
Just so everyone doesn't call me on not mentioning several other good calibers, the 7mm is good for long range stuff (it's almost a .30 caliber) and the .270 is a good varmint/deer round, too.
Hope that helps a little bit.
joe
I'll post a little more about makes/models later.

I personally have done nothing, but my well calibrated trigger finger (ha, yeah right!) tells me that this trigger is somewhere in the 2 pound range.
Seriously, I think about firing the rifle and it goes off... it's the lightest trigger I have ever felt. And breaks like glass.

How do, thejoe. That barrel is considered a medium contour. Ruger puts it on their 25-06s, 300 Win Mags, and 338 Win Mags. In the 25-06 it is plenty stiff without being overly heavy. And sometimes they respond really well to free floating, but on half of my medium-contour Rugers I got better groups with a small amount of pressure right at the forearm tip.
I floated everything and then inserted shims cut from a soda can between the forend tip and the barrel until I no longer saw any stringing in the groups. At that point, I took out the shims and measured them, then built up a pad of Acra Glas where the shims were and sanded it down to the same thickness. My 300 Win Mag groups like a varmint rifle (sub 1" groups at 200 yards) after that treatment.

I was in South Dakota for a few years and took up the art of varmit shooting. You'd be suprised at what people would bring to shoot.
I used a Rem. 700 VS in .223. I could shoot all day long for not much money plus I got to see the impact in the scope because there was no recoil.
Most fun I've ever had with my clothes on!
