Yeah, it doesn't work out to ride to save money. Factoring in the cost of the bike, and it would be about 55,000 miles before you saved $5,000 in fuel to make up the cost of the bike, insurance and riding gear.

So, I've drawn the conclusion that my wife's idea of getting bikes to save money doesn't work...it's all about the enjoyment of riding.

You could actually make it beneficial financially but you'd have to get used gear, cheap bike, and ride it more. If gas continues to go up you're savings would add up quicker. I just want to ride man. I've always wanted a bike and I'm so close I can taste it (MSF is in 2 weeks), but I dont know if it will last. I'm wishy washy on my hobbies so I might sell my bike in a year or two and move on to something else but I would atleast like to say I've ridden a MC before.

You would actually need to ride less or the same than when you drove. The problem a lot of folks run into (myself included) is that you will find yourself riding many more miles than you drive. Stuff like taking the long way home or to work is an example.

Tires alone wear out (depending on what you ride and how you ride) every 10k miles if you are luckly. If you get a sport bike and put sticky tires on it expect to get half that if you are lucky. Sport tires run a pretty penny also. Chains wear out at about 10-20 k miles depending on brand and quality and how often you clean and lube it. Chain and Sprocket set (both should be replaced at the same time) will run you around 200 dollars.

If you get a shaft drive bike (pretty much cruisers and BMWs) you don't have to worry about that unless the final drive goes out which is pretty rare.

There is other misc stuff that will need to be replaced but tires is the biggest one and where you loose all of your "savings".

I'm not trying to talk you out of riding at all but I'm just letting you know that riding is not saving you anything.

I want to ride, plain and simple. It will be rewarding to fill up the bike for under $15 though. I don't care really how often, it's just that I put $20 in the tank now and I don't even get a 1/4.

I really am looking forward to riding, especially now that the daytime temps are up in the high 60s and low 70s.

A big +1 on that. I dont even fill up my G any more. $20 when the light comes on will yet me around 1/3 tank. Good for only 2 days.

This is what my bike should look like. However mines in pieces in my Garage. I bought it from a guy who laid it down and didn't want to fix it.
