The beginnings of a HDR!

Over spring break, I ordered an AR lower and Magpul trigger guard from Spike's Tactical on the reccomendation from Palmguy. My mailman has his FFL and said he'd handle the transfer for cheap. Well, after some slowness, I just got back from my FFL's house (you know you've got something good going when you can go to your FFL's house, talk with him about guns/reloading/collecting/safes/houses/setting up shop for 2-3 hours) and I now have myself the beginnings of my first rifle. Sorry the pics are blurry, had to borrow my mom's camera. I'll take some better pictures after I get my loot from the gun show on Saturday (parts kit and stock)

Lower:

Magpul Trigger Guard

Kind of mocked up:

it'll look much better in a week

Looks like fun. I have been thinking about building an AR. I am interested in keeping up with your build.

Thanks guys. Finding out my mail man had his FFL was great, only problem is that he moves at his pace (which is best described as "good-ole boy" pace). I'm probably gonna be using him again later because I'm planning on buying a couple more lowers from Spike's. As for a bit of an update, I went shopping today at the Indy 1500 Gun Show. So I've got all the parts I need to put the lower receiver together now.

The loot:

Model 1 Sales Lower parts kit and 4-position collapsible stock assembly (made by FiberLight), with the wrench included, that was $110. I wanted the 6-position stock, but didn't have the extra cash to upgrade . . . maybe later.
Hogue Grip for the AR (soooo much more comfortable than the stock plastic one), $18
Pachmayr slip on for my XD

And I just couldn't resist mocking it up again.

Right now, it looks like this thing is going to be a Spike's lower, with a Hogue Grip, M1S internals and stock, and a Del-Ton upper. Guess it's kinda like building a hot-rod with what you have available.

For anyone interested, Midway USA has the AR grips on sale for $13.99 this month. I was gonna order from them, but I figured after shipping it would have cost me at least $18 and I didn't have to wait today.

Heh, I tried to start it on Monday night, but the bolt catch buffer was oversized/out of spec or the hole for it in the receiver was out of spec. I'm waiting on another buffer and spring to come in before I can go any further.

So right now, it's got that mag catch in and that's it.

As per mvician's request, got that LPK installed:

And a couple gratuitous shots with the XD

Only problem is that while I was trying to put the pivot pin in, the spring and detent went flying (and if you'd seen my room, you'd realize that they're lost!). I'm going to swing by Gander tomorrow and see if they sell the parts. If not, I'm just gonna do without until I order the upper.

EDIT: Found the detent, no spring though.

Great build! Love that trigger bar! I like the egro grip but I like the hogue as well. I have built several Ar's and they make a great project.
