Photo's of the new 45 XD Tactical Compact
Seeing it is '07 here are the new pics of the 45 ACP 5" Tactical w/ Compact frame. It has the normal slide BUT a compact grip. It comes with one mag that has a standard floor plate and two extended mags.

What is the advantage of a short grip on a long barreled handgun? Concealability? I would think 5'' of slide would be hard enough

With certain holsters, like ITW, the slide is concealed in the pants and it is the grip that "sticks out" or makes it difficult to conceal. For LE this might be an option seeing that the officer can buy another extended magazine and have a "full' size weapon for duty with two spare mags . Then they can swap out mags to the standard for off-duty carry.
