1950's luggage box turned range box
Yep , I was under the house looking for something and came across an old 1950's luggage/cosmetic box, that's when the idea struck me that I could make a pretty cool range box out of it, after a few days of thinking how I wanted to do it, I began to strip the inside of the box bare, it had a mirror, old falling apart pockets, I ripped everything out..
I took a trip to the local fabric shop and snagged up some foam, that stuff is kinda spendy I spent $20..
Anyway's here is how it came out, I am not totally done yet but you can get the picture of where im going with it..
Heres a picture of the box when its shut, Im going to paint it black I think, I cant paint the handle so Im just going to replace it with something else..
Here is a picture of the holes I cut out to fit the mags and pistols..
Heres a picture with the holes filled up.. I only have two mags right now for each pistol but there will be enough room to fit 6 mags each + one in each pistol making a total of 14 mags I can carry in this box (7 each)
The only other accessories I want to carry in this box are the speed loaders, I havent cut the holes out yet but this is how I would like them to sit.. (They will sit flush in the foam)

Great job, if you don't like the color you might try some apolstery paint from the auto parts supply.
How did you cut the foam and keep it so square?
Want to see the finished prouduct, so keep us posted.

Absolutely a great idea and a great job.
I'm also wondering how you managed to cut the foam so well.

Looks very cool!! You may want to put the mag loaders in vertically in case you want some room for other accessories like a holster. Where did you get the foam to fill the bottom half?

Cool idea and still room for more expansion.

I decided to angle the speed loaders a different way, it just gave me way more room for other options
As for how I got everything square, it was pretty much by eye and that I tried to be as precise as I could. I also cut out a template with some thin card board then traced around the template on the foam.
As for cutting the foam, I used a razor blade on the initial cuts, just because the razor blade gave it more of a clean cut look. After I went in as far as I could with the razor, I finished with a serrated knife, the serrated knife cuts quite well.
The foam I used for the pistols/mags/speed loaders is 5 inch, the holes I cut for the pistols went all the way though. The service XD doesn't protrude through the 5 inch foam but the tactical does. Underneath the 5 inch foam is a piece of umm I think its 1 inch foam so the tip of the gun isn't hitting hard plastic. Everything sits snug and locks up tight when the lid is closed and latched. I used the (I think its called egg foam?) on the lid so it braces everything once the lid is closed.
I was surprised how smoothly everything went and am happy with the outcome. I will post pictures when I get it finished.. Thanks for all the feedback..

LOL, I think we came up with the same idea at the same time Actually you meant straight up and down right? I think I did it this way based on that I just thought it looked better, but I still saved a lot of space..
The thin foam I used on the bottom I got at Mills end here in Reno, it was initially 2 inch, I cut it right in half to make it one inch (or thinner) reason why is because the 45 tactical wouldnt fit with 2 inch, now it fits like a glove...

That's a sweet looking box. I can't tell if I'm more jealous of the nice box, or what's in it. On second thought, it has to be what is in it!! Which one is the bi-tone, service or tac?
