The guide rod was purposely designed to extend past the slide to prevent the gun from disengaging in battery when pressed against an object.

I would rather have it flush, then it can't snag on anything, but my XD-40 still shoots great

Here's my Xd45 Compact. Not a target gun, but used for HD, shooting wild pigs, and as a backup when bowhunting for the 6 "P's": Protection from Pumas, Pigs, Pooches, Pooh-bears and Punks.
