last weeks shooting
went shooting last week for the first time in a while...
tried the ol' rifle at 500 yards and feel pretty good for it, since it is my first time over 300 (only done 300 yards twice)
well.. here is what you want to see.... (shots are from my remington 700 sps tactical, .308, federal powershock ammo)
and this was my warmup from 300 yards
myself and fellow xdtalker sniper300gt will be doing some .22 shooting Wednesday, hopefully pictures to follow... (if i can remember the camera)

No to mention a DAM fine rifle. Lets just say that the rifle/ ammo/ shooter are 1MOA capiable, at 500 yards that a hair over 5" (A CD, not penny). Now lets compare that to some shooting on the recently increase "shooting shows" on TV. On group from FT benning sniper program shot a 0.38" group on a known distant range 100yards, expand that group out to 500 yards. if everything holds true it is still 1.9" or 2.5 x the diameter of a penny. To hit your penny you would need to shoot 0.15MOA or just a hair over 1/8" at 100yards.
This is assuming ALL things equal, which we know the wind changes, shooter error etc are also increased. Not saying its not possible, but to belittle a fellow XDer who is exanding his shooting ability and increasing his skill is sad. We could try changing shoes, wouldnt you have a shooting career in the Army instead of a heavy construction equipment operator being that good of a shot?
Regardless of your MOS, thank you for serving and hopefully any future/ current deployments are safe for you. I leave for Iraq first week of Oct.
DSMITTY, great job and sounds like you had a great time. Miss having longer ranges avilable to me, the local outdoor range only has a few 300 yard lanes and they are only open certian days. Keep up the shooting!

500 Yard penny shots
Most people trying to shoot a penny at 500 yds. will usualy tape a penny to the center of a bullseye target so your not realy shooting a penny but the target. If you glue a penny to a blank sheet of paper you will find out that nobody will take the challenge. In the past 20 years I have shot a penny on blank paper a number of times at 400 yds. my best friend ask me why I didnt shoot it at 500 yds. I told him I dont know I never tried he said its only another 100 yds. I told him I shoot at 400 yds. because its 1/4 of a mile. To make the shot youll never be able to see the penny instead you have to feel the shot and as far as I know Im the only man to make the shot every time. For fun I put 10 pennies on a board and shoot them one handed with my target pistol for the kids because to me its not skill its a trick.

The 300 yard target is very good but forget about 500 yards. It is just too far away for any good use.
