Ptr 91 giThis is a discussion on Ptr 91 gi within the Other Long Gun Talk forums, part of the Long Gun Talk category; I've been doing some research on this rifle lately, and wondered if anyone has one.
Overall, how has your experience been?...

I've got a couple of PTR's--a 91k and a MSG.
Great experience with both of them. I wouldn't hesitate to get another one.

What role do these rifles tend to fill (outside of the military, of course)? I'm guessing as a hunting rifle and range rifle, although for plinking that seems kind of expensive. It seems a bit too powerful for a home-defense gun, not that many of you are using them for that. However, they seem incredibly reliable & accurate from what I hear. How hard are they to clean/maintain, how is it finding parts, and how customizable are they? I'd also be curious to hear how different the carbine handles/shoots compared to the standard 18" model.
Also, has anybody tried the PTR-32? From what I can find, it's the same gun only chambered for 7.62x39.
Cool looking gun though.
-Cheers

Co-worker of a friend heard I was considering an AR15 and said forget about it, come shoot my PTR91... so I'm doing that this weekend. He has some history with long distance sniper work in the Marines.

Please let us know what you think. I made the mistake of starting to read up on these things and they are really starting to intrigue me.

The carbine makes one heck of a home defense rifle; loaded with a fairly thin jacketed varmint-type bullet, it's going to be about as close to a one-shot stopper as you can get, providing you put it somewhere between the neck and the gonads...
Compared to a 18" rifle, it's a little lighter, a little faster handling, doesn't have a lot more recoil, accuracy is still pretty good but falls off at a shorter range than the 18".
Very easy to clean and maintain, parts are fairly easy to find (lots of G3 kits running around out there), not as tinkertoy customizable as an AR-15, but you can get plenty going on with them.
And mags are about as cheap as you can buy for a semiauto, high-cap rifle...often under $5/per.

I have one of the early PTR-91s (the good ones). It only runs reliably with good, non tar sealed ammo, which is expensive.
It's basically a fun range toy. It's never been reliable enough to trust with my life and it's too heavy for hunting or humping.

The shoot has been pushed out for two weeks He's promised to bring his AK too. Me thinks SWMBO is not going to like the .308. I asked him again if the .308 is that much better then the .223, and he said absolutely.

This is such an overlooked rifle in my opinion! My buddy has one and it is freaking sweet! He generally pays about $1.00 for his mags and it shoots everything from cheap to expensive ammo great!! I want one some day!!
