Refinishing a 1943 Izhevsk Mosin Nagant 91/30

So I've been looking at buying a Mosin Nagant 91/30 for the past couple weeks. Instead of buying one online, I waited until a gun show came into town because I like to look at things if they are not new before I buy them, especially with something this old and likely to be thrashed up a bit.

So within a hour of the gun show opening, I scored a 1943 Izhevsk Mosin for $90 out the door, as well as 440 round tin for another $80! Pretty average costs, but it's a great feeling walking out of a show with a gun and almost 500 rounds for well under $200! As most of the Mosin's come, this one had cosmoline all over it. Actually pulled it out of a newly opened crate when I bought it. It was better looking than most in there. I chose this one because it had brass rings on the top wooden piece instead of black, and the metal pieces that are around the openings for the sling were the screw in type instead of the pressed in type. It's a little different, which is what I wanted.

I'm 2 days into the restore right now, and should have it finished up later this week if I get some time off from school. All the metal has been cleaned and oiled. The stock was wiped with lacquer thinner to draw most of the cosmoline and finish off, sanded down smooth, and heated with a heat gun to draw out even more cosmoline! That stuff is nasty... 1st coat of stain is on tonight. Should have it done Wednesday I'm hoping. I haven't taken progress pics, kinda wish I would have to see the before and after. I'll get some finished product pics on here as soon as it's done!

I bought one right after Christmas. Mine turned out pretty well. Haven't gotten to shoot it yet, but honestly, can't wait.

Good luck! Have fun!

So I put 2 coats of Minwax stain on and 3 coats of the satin polyurethane finishing spray. Waiting for it to dry (hopefully by tomorrow because it's a bit cold in MO right now). I'll sand it down with some 400 or 600 grit paper then do one last coat in our paint booth so hopefully no dust gets on it. Should have it together this weekend sometime. I'll get some actual pics up once it's done. I know the thread is useless without them... Ordered a Bushnell 3-9x40 scope last night and a set of rings that will hopefully be a good combo for the Mosin. I'll update and post pics on that once it's on and been tested. Thanks

Well it took longer than I thought to dry. Mainly because I'm a newb to the whole staining process and probably should have waited longer between coats, as well as wipe more stain off. But none the less, it's done! Looks pretty nice IMO. I liked this one because of the brass around the top wooden piece. They shined up well. Ended up purchasing an offset scope mount and a Simmons fixed 4 power LER scope. The combo works perfectly. Ordered a Bushnell 3-9x scope first, but the 6 inches of eye relief was no where near enough. The barrel looks flawless, so this should be pretty damn accurate once I sight everything up. Here are some pics of the refinished Mosin!

(Wouldn't flip up)

Most sweet, thats a beaut! What scope mount is that?

Make sure you swab the bore in short order with some water or something to neutralize the salts in that corrosive ammo...otherwise it more than likely will rust up.

Thanks for the advice Yea I did some research on how to clean these suckers before I shot it because of the corrosive ammo... Bought a bottle of off brand Windex with the ammonia in it to spray down after shooting until I get home and can thoroughly clean it. Test fired it twice a couple days ago to make sure it worked. It went bang Cleaned it afterwards...

The rings were cheap... But I liked how the dovetail was one long piece instead of 2 small ones just below the rings. Seemed like the more contact it would have with the dovetail, the better it would hold on. It's made for a .22lr or an airsoft gun believe it or not, but I did some research and found that others on a different forum had good luck with it on the mosin, as well as a few on the amazon reviews. For $14 it was worth the gamble. Used some blue loctite on all the screws so hopefully this thing isn't goin anywhere! I'll be sure to update what I think of everything once I shoot it.

Well took it out and shot about 70 rounds through it. Sucker kicks pretty good! Got everything sighted up pretty good. At 50 yards, I was hitting the 9 score ring every time on a 6 inch target. At 100 yards, I hit bullseye a few times and kept it on the ring. It was hard from that far away with only a 4 power scope and the heavy trigger it has. I was resting the front if the gun on an ammo can to be as steady as possible. It seems consistent and the scope doesn't seem to be moving at all. Time will tell. Its some damn with a big bang

Shes a beaut! I love the brass on the upper barrel cover. Makes it look real sharp! I have 2 Mosins myself. One is a 1937 Izhevsk with a Remington bolt and the other is a 1943 Izhevsk. No scope on either of mine but one did come with the pig sticker of a bayonet (at 18 inches). Is the barrel counter bored? I know they did that to a lot of them to make them a little more accurate due to damaged rifling. My 43 had it done but my 37 is the original rifling.
Just make sure to clean it after every use keep it oiled and you will pass that gun down to your grand kids! Great gun! Have fun!

Mines for the original rifling on it, no counter bore. Seems pretty accurate, more so than I am. Been keeping it clean as well. I run winded through it and on the bolt, then clean it like normal afterwards. Seems to be working well. Glad yours are treating you good and hopefully mine will last me so my grandkids do enjoy them!

Mind if I ask how you mounted that scope mount?

I have the elcheapo one that replaces the site...then has locking screws
