should i get a mosin nagant?
i have a little money to spend and they are really cheap. part of me wants it just to have it, the other wonders if there is any practical use for it. i would mostly like to have it for long range shooting.
i also want an AR but the cheap price of the nagant makes me want to just pick one up... should i? or should i pass and put the money into the AR?

If you have to ask you probably shouldn't buy one! Do it...you won't regret it.

MN's are fun to shoot. Cheap ammo and cheap rifles mean you can run one even on a budget. Three things to keep in mind.
1. Check the rifling on the barrel. If you're going for accuracy this is key. There are many surplus MN's with barrels that look as rough as an emery board.
2. Cheap surplus ammo is usually corrosive (see above), so be prepared to clean your rifle after every trip to the range.
3. If you want to hunt with it, use soft point ammo. The steel core surplus stuff won't expand much on impact.
I love my MN for shooting something more than my 10/22.

thy are so cheap, I've been thinking about getting a couple to bury with a sealed spam can or two.
other than that, it would be pointless. I am set for deer rifles.

Thats like asking us if you should drink out of a wine glass or mason jar. I get alot of looks when I go to the range with mine (especially with bayonet afixed. it is more accurate with bayonet on it). I like the price, simplicity and all out indestructiveness of them. I don't think you will regret it but I think I would go AR first.

They are a ton of fun and CHEAP. Get one. You won't regret it. $100 bucks towards and AR is a start, but you would still have a way to go before you get to bring one home.

Get one. You will loose a $100 on the AR just buy buying it, switching out accesories, ect.
The Mosin is a great shooter, inexpensive, cheep to run, and accesoriazable(that can't be spelled right...). Check out: 7.62x54r.net if you have not already.
And, yes...you could hunt with it. I am thinking deer, hogs, coyote. Here is another site with a stock kit: Mosin Nagant Stocks ... thinking about picking up another one and adding a stock kit and scope. Should be fun.
Good luck and post pics and details when you get it!
