I don't think you will regret it but I think I would go AR first.

Another YES here. They are great rifles, fun, cheap, great to mess with if you like practicing gun smithing. I screwed up my first one trying to drill scope mount holes..., so I need to get another one .

thanks for the input everyone, i really appreciate it. i still need to dig into them and do some research (i love researching firearms).

the rifling on the barrel does concern me a bit as i'll most likely be buying online and won't be able to check that prior to getting it. i do want this to be accurate as i would consider a potential hunting rifle until i get more, my gun collection is just starting out and this would be my first rifle (other than my marlin 795). any suggestions for how to overcome that obstacle or am i making mountains out of mole hills?

i had trouble getting mine clean. it was a last resort, but I ended up using a copper brush on a low speed drill as recommended in a thread I started about my dirty bore. i have not fired it since I did that so I cant say if it helped accuracy but it did clean the rifling up pretty well.

They are more accurate with bayonet because they were calibrated & sighted/BZO with bayonet attached. Removing the bayonet changes the barrel's harmonics. It was Russian doctrine to keep the bayonet attached at all times.
Ok...I'm off the soap box. Sorry about the history rant lol

To answer your question...Yes, get one. You won't regret it.

Think of it this way... $100 will get you a club, a post hole digger and a tent pole all in a package you can sling on your back. The fact that it shoots is just a bonus!

I got mine just after Christmas. I have already re-done the stock and can't wait to shoot it. Hell, I'm considering going out in the midst of a Wisconsin winter just to fire it. I hope it shoots well, but even if it doesn't, I still have a "trophy" to hang over the mantle.

You're buying a piece of history for $100. You can also take pride in the job you do getting it back to a working model. You've never done wood work before? Yeah, neither had I. I'd say it turned out pretty well.

I think you should get the Mosin. Come on, it doesn't cost much! I have yet to get mine but from what I have heard they are fairly accurate and unbreakable albeit a handful to shoot (hefty round). That aside, they are a piece of history.

I have 2. The first one was an impulse buy, and i didn't know much about them. I installed modern composite furniture, a scope, and a modern bolt handle on it. It looks more like a modern hunting rifle, and is just as accurate. The second is still covered in cosmo. This spring I will refinish the furniture, and restore the original good looks.
