Thank you to everyone. I'm going to clean in up real good and take it into my LGS . See what he thinks about it before letting some lead fly. After looking at ammo this will not be my weekend toy but should be a fun shooter.

NOTHING was stronger than the Mauser Large Ring 98, to my knowledge.

Gazillions of them have been sporterized and even redone into Safari Rifles in ridiculous calibers such as 416 Rigby, 450 Nitro and other "oh my gawd! I broke me ARM " calibers.....

I want to say American Rifleman did a series on the major WWII bolt actions (Mauser, Springfield, Enfield, Arisaka...don't know if the M-N was included) back in the 50's or 60's...it was a destruction test, and the Arisaka was the one bolt action that couldn't be blown up. IIRC, there were several stories of people firing the 7.7 ammo in 6.5 Arisakas...said they'd just kick hard, but wouldn't blow up...just swaged that 7.7 bullet down...

Of course, this would be the pre-war and early war models; probably wouldn't want to do that with a last ditch...but then again, late war production Mausers were nothing to shout about either.

Just a little bit of google-fu...seems it was none other than P.O. Ackley hisself that did the testing...Japan's intriguing Arisakas | Guns Magazine | Find Articles

And it was the 6.5 Arisaka's...perhaps the 7.7's were less stout.
