Remington 700 SPS Tactical 308win $581.00 SHIPS FREE
^ building a mosin would be fun but I'm looking at this pretty hard. between the 10/22 and one of these I could build skill and not have so many mechanical variables to worry about.

I've cleaned up some pretty bad M1's up using Kreosene. The quick way we checked out the barrel sizing on the M1's was to take a bullet and place it in the end of the barrel if the bullet goes in all the way to the brass the end of the barrel is pretty well shot out. A guy I met who specializes in M1's says many times it's the last 8 to 10 inches or so on the barrel of these old battle weapons that is shot out do to moisture that collects there do to a hot barrel. Bullets leave the end of the barrel cold and moist air is drawn into the barrel.

I see what you're saying about shortening the barrel, you could always do some woodwork and shorten the stock too... I'm actually doing something similar with my stock, I took the rings and the top piece off, I'm going to shorten the bottom part about halfway to make it stronger, move the sling mounts back, and sand the channel so its free floated.

so I take a bullet and put it in the muzzle and if it reaches the brass, its no good.
I have started pulling mostly white patches after a nice round of slow drill brushing and 40X treatment.
boom!

DOH!
so it passed the bullet test and the bore is starting to come clean.
how much rust and pitting is a problem?
the chamber has what appears to be flash rust (constantly now after i scrubbed it out and finally got it clean) and the bore has pitting.
I wonder of the hard chambering of rounds isnt because the chamber is rough from rust.

My M1 never comes completely clean.God only knows what it's been through. However it still shoots fairly well for a 65 year old battle weapon. I could change the barrel on it and I'm sure it would shoot much more accurately, but I choose to leave it as it was when I got it. Once twice a year I get together with some friends who have M1's that the main parts are original and we have a little shooting contest. We might not shoot as accurately as we do with our other rifles but we sure do have fun.

ok so I'll call her "good" when I just have gray stripes on the white patch.
the past few days I have really focused on it and I think it's improved a great deal. that drill trick really did it I think.
I think I will work on the chamber a bit and see if I can smooth out the bolt before I put her back together.
